Sunnyside Park sign on hold

ATLANTIC – Placing a sign at the entrance of Sunnyside Park on 10th Street is on hold after a structural engineer said the pillars there are not structurally sound to hold the weight of the sign.

Members of the Atlantic Girl Scouts proposed the idea early this year when they wanted to fix and repaint the pillars at the entrance, and add an iron sign that says “Sunnyside Park” above the pillars.

Atlantic Park and Recreation Director Seth Staashelm said Monday that the sign weighs 1,400 pounds, and Atlantic Council Member Chris Jimerson suggested making sure the pillars could hold the sign. Staashelm had a structural engineer look at the pillars, and even removed part of the one during the examination.

That was when it was determined that the pillars were too weak the hold the weight of the sign.  Staashelm said he is waiting for a recommendation from the engineer on what to do next with the project.
