Woman who knocked over artworks taking selfie revealed to be Chinese student
Footage of the woman toppling over group of exhibits in a gallery like a row of dominos was shared around the world on the internet
The woman who knocked over a group of artworks worth about US$200,000 while taking a selfie at a Los Angeles gallery has been revealed as a Chinese student, according to a news website report.
It has also been disclosed that the Hong Kong based artist Simon Birch will not make the woman pay for damages, saying it was purely an accident.
The woman backed into one of the artworks mounted on a pedestal at the gallery, knocking it over and toppling nine other pieces similarly mounted behind it like a row of dominoes.
The news website Hongxing news revealed that the woman was a Chinese student, but did not give her name.
The woman was horrified when she knocked over the artworks, according to the report.
Birch was quoted by the Chinese news outlet Red Star News as saying that no action would be taken against the woman.
“It’s no big deal. Besides, no one got hurt,” he said.
Birch’s art project was six years in the making and was due to be exhibited in Hong Kong, according to the design website Design Milk.
“After we recorded the details of the incident, we decided not to take any measures against her. It’s clearly an accident and she’s just a student. We are a non-profit organisation – it is not possible for us to sue her.” Birch told Red Star News.
The tourist in her 50s was visiting a jade shop in the border city of Ruili when she dropped the bracelet after trying it on.
