On the first of April my county sent me my new value notices. My values increased by $650,000. This represents a $18,000 tax increase. So I jumped and started preparing my protest, visited the appraisal district several times, and today settled my last one. My taxes now will only go up about $6000, since I was able to fight and get $450,000 reduction of the $650,000. My point to this is, fight your value notices, don't roll over and play dead. I now have an extra $12,000 that I'll earn this year so I am pay federal income tax on that, lol --75.141.xxx.xxx

Gees, I thought that NJ was tough. I took about 5 grand over today to the tax office for mine. I put one bill and one check in the slot at a time so they can log it in and give me a receipt. New guy with foreign accent orders me to put all the checks in the slot. I want to say bad things but I just smile and say, no, I can't do that. He looks at me with wide eyes. Then he fiddles around with the one big check for two of the four properties and is having trouble figuring out what to do. One at a time is all he could manage. One check for two properties was too much for him. How dare he order me to do anything. He looks like a camel jockey. Scary. --73.33.xxx.xxx

I always go in to fight any assessment increase. I also go in when I buy a new property to make sure it gets lowered to the amount I paid or close to it. I won't pay any more than I have to and even that is too much --108.44.xx.xx

I use this gut check when I receive a new appraisal and assessment. If someone offered me that price for the property, what would be my reaction? If it's "WOOT-WOOT CHA-CHING!!!!" then the new appraisal is probably too high and I will protest it. I've had great success protesting these. If it's "No Way!" or "Let me think about it" then I leave it alone. --70.178.x.xx

A few years back a tax increase around here was passed on the grounds that the government will spend it to stimulate the economy.

Here is an idea - let the tax payers stimulate the economy instead

Good on you Homer for fighting the man, especially your Uncle Sam.

I would not mind taxes nearly as much if the government had actually bought me a tool box and taught me a trade - then I could see the silent partnership we are in. --24.239.xx.xxx

Great News Homer!! Thanks for sharing as encouragement to us all. There is a very large percentage of landlords who have never tried protesting their property assessments, and as a result are paying thousands of dollars that they don't have to.

So much cash flow is being lost by landlords that it prompted me in fact, to have a speaker, David Krulac, at this year's LandlordConvention.com, who will specifically teach landlords numerous strategies to contest your property assessments.

David has successfully contested hundreds of property assessments. One year alone, he appealed 65 properties. He will share several proven strategies on how landlords in any state can effectively challenge their property assessments and win! --72.214.xx.x

I appealed 11 properties last month. The city increased the taxes on these properties by a total of $4,000/year. I will find out next month if the appeal was successful. --70.188.x.xx

I went in once to appeal. Property values in my neck of the woods vary hugely depending on whether the house has been updated or not, and is very specific to which street and even which end of a street it is on.

But this being a big city, asssessments are done via a computer formula. My property was compared to very dissimilar properties that were geographically close. I showed the assessor my list of comps and he showed me the computer evaluation and told me that his was better. So I didn't have any success. I look forward to Krulac's talk!
