Neighbors say they're shocked by the slayings

Three children were killed Wednesday night inside a West Sacramento apartment complex, and their father was arrested hours later near I-80 in Sacramento, officers said.The three children were identified by the Yolo County Coroner's Office as Kelvin Hodges, 11, Julie Hodges, 9, and Lucas Hodges, 7 months old.Robert Hodges, 32, of West Sacramento, was taken into custody at about midnight Thursday by California Highway Patrol officers off Interstate 80 and West El Camino Avenue, West Sacramento police Sgt. Roger Kinney said.Hodges, who is the children's father, was detained without incident, police said. No additional details about the arrest were released.The triple-homicide happened sometime after 9 p.m. at the Timbers Apartments on Touchstone Place.The initial 911 call came in as a domestic violence incident, and as police were on the way to the apartment, someone called 911 again to report the children were possibly dead, Kinney said.Click here to get help and for tips to deal with domestic violence incidentsFirst responders performed life-saving measures on the children, but all three were pronounced dead at the scene. Details as to how they were killed have not yet been released."Something like this is very disturbing," Kinney said. "The officers are absolutely impacted, along with the firefighters, and certainly the family, the neighbors -- this call is going to have quite a bit of emotion. It's horrific, and it's very difficult to deal with. This is going to take not hours, not days, it's going to take a long time to come to grips with what happened there."The mother was a victim of domestic violence, Kinney said. No details about what happened to her were released.Detectives will investigate whether there was a history of domestic violence at the home.Hodges is expected to be arraigned on Monday, Kinney said."Obviously, she's traumatized, and it's going to take some time to find out what's going on," Kinney said.West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon released this statement Thursday morning:"All of West Sacramento stands together in profound heartbreak, shocked by the vile domestic murder of three children in our community. In a small town, each of us, whether parents, neighbors, mentors, and just plain citizens, know that protecting our children is our most sacred duty, and the betrayal of that duty in the home is unfathomable and unconscionable. Our thoughts go out to the families, friends and classmates of the young victims. Together, we grieve this loss."Two of the children were students at Southport Elementary School. A vigil for the victims will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the school.Guidance counselors and chaplains will be at the school at least through the rest of the week to help students, teachers and parents deal with the tragic deaths.Neighbors in the complex were shocked by the slayings.Theresa Bustamante lives next to the apartment where the children were killed. She said there were no signs of trouble or fighting before Wednesday night.“No fighting, no nothing. (These apartments are) so quiet. I was in my apartment all the time. I was watching my movies and I didn’t hear nothing,” Bustamante said.Alina and Daniel Vertelnikov are neighbors and friends of the victims.“I played with her almost every single day … she was a nice friend,” Alina said."We always played together. We played different games like racing, and I don’t know, it’s (like) bang. It just happened.
