TACOMA, Wash. - Steven Powell was released from prison Tuesday after serving his sentence for possessing child pornography, ending another chapter in the saga of a family that made tragic headlines for years after his son Josh came under suspicion for the disappearance of his daughter-in-law Susan Powell.

Powell, 66, was convicted in 2015 of possessing explicit images of two neighbor girls, ages 8 and 10, that prosecutors say were taken from a bedroom window of his home in 2006 and 2007.

His prison release comes after he completed his prison term at the Monroe Correctional Complex, said Jeremy Barclay with the state Department of Corrections. Powell will now be classified as a Level 2 sex offender and will remain under community supervision until June 2019.

In 2012 Powell was also convicted on 14 counts of voyeurism for shooting video and still pictures of the girls as they used a family bathroom next door. The child porn charges were thrown out by a Superior Court judge before the voyeurism trial but were reinstated by an appeals court.

Steven Powell is the father of Josh Powell, who killed his two young sons and himself February 2012 in a fiery explosion while under investigation for the disappearance of his wife Susan Cox Powell in Utah.

During Steven Powell's voyeurism trial, evidence from his own journals showed that he had been stalking Susan Powell and taking secret video of her before her disappearance.

He also admitted to using a mirror he slipped under the bathroom door to spy on Susan while she went to the bathroom.

Susan Powell is presumed dead, apparently at the hands of her husband, Josh Powell, after she disappeared nearly eight years ago.

Josh Powell said at the time that Susan disappeared one night in December 2009 when he had taken their two sons on an impromptu late-night camping trip in subfreezing temperatures in the Utah desert.
