Asian University Digital Resource Network, Miriam College

Local Knowledge Initiative

As part of the Local Knowledge Initiative - a project funded by the United Board for
Christian Higher Education in Asia - Miriam College, institutional host of the Asian
University Digital Resource Network (AUDRN) invites proposals from institutions of higher
education in the Philippines, particularly for projects which can serve as models of uses of
digital tools in the collection, organizing and sharing of local knowledge, and/or build the
capacity of an institution’s faculty, library staff and students in the use of digital tools for
teaching, learning, research (especially by student researchers) and/or service.

Background
The rapid pace of globalization and the development of digital tools has made the
preservation of indigenous knowledge – everything from local dialects and music to religious
practices and knowledge of medicinal plants – all the more urgent and all the more possible.
Digital technology, particularly low-cost hardware and open-source software such as mobile
phones with video, audio and camera functions, can be an efficient and effective way to
document and preserve cultural assets. Local knowledge can be captured and organized by
students, faculty and/or library staff in digital form and can be integrated into courses in any
discipline, and also into service learning and other community-based-learning projects.

Proposal details

The following themes will be considered:

1. Language in any form, e.g. folklore and music

2. Coastal Resource Practices
3. Indigenous medicinal plants for wellness
4. Sustainable economic practices in agriculture
5. Spirituality and the Youth

Priority will be given to proposals that meet at least one of these criteria:

Create replicable models of uses of local knowledge and digital tools for teaching and
learning in higher education.

Expand the capacity of an institution’s faculty, library staff and students in the use of
digital tools for teaching, learning, research (especially by student researchers) and/or
service through the collection, organization and sharing of local knowledge data.

Integrate local knowledge and digital tools into community outreach, service-learning and
similar service activities.
Emphasize collaboration in the collection and/or use of local knowledge data (e.g., among
classes, across departments, among the institution and community, or among higher
education institutions in one country or internationally).

Proposals should explain the significance of the local knowledge that will be collected and
how it will be organized and shared. Projects may be in any academic discipline (arts, social
sciences, humanities, sciences or across disciplines and departments). Proposals related to
United Board initiatives in environment and community or public health, and inter-religious
understanding and peace building are of particular interest.

Hardware and software costs should account for no more than 25% of the proposal budget.
Approved proposals will be required to produce a report including links to online data no later
than June 30, 2011.

The budget for proposals is Php40,000. We anticipate that 5 grants will be awarded. The
proposal deadline is September 30, 2010. Please send proposals to joel.yuvienco@gmail.com
Grants will be awarded by October 15, 2010. Project activity must be completed and final
reports submitted by June 30, 2011.

Local knowledge proposals do not include:

● faculty research projects
● digitizing of archives
● cost of bandwidth, electricity, or servers. We encourage project organizers to use
equipment on hand.

Our hope is that these proposals can not only enhance the activities of higher education
institutions, but also promote the online networking via the Asian University Digital Resource
Network (AUDRN) at http://audrnet.ning.com/ Organizers of local knowledge projects
may be invited to participate in training workshops or other local knowledge events in 2011.

We welcome inquiries regarding possible proposals. Questions should be directed to

joel.yuvienco@gmail.com
