Smart Lighting Update

The City of Chicago, in order to save money and improve public safety, is in the process of updating the old high-pressure sodium lamps with new LED lights.  In a previous newsletter, I explained that the first lights that would be replaced were those along arterial streets, under viaducts, and in neighborhoods where they were most needed.  The Smart Lighting Program has now expanded to residential streets.  In the upcoming weeks, residential streets south of North Avenue and west of Western Avenue (see map below) will be the first in the ward to have the lamps replaced.  I will continue to update you as the new lamps are rolled out into other sections of the ward.

College Help

Chicago Scholars is a nonprofit organization committed to breaking down fundamental barriers for academically ambitious, first-generation college students from under-resourced communities.

Chicago Scholars is now accepting applications for students to join the class of 2023!  Currently, there are 39 students from the 1st Ward participating in Chicago Scholars and I would like to see more become involved this year.

Chicago Scholars has a high success rate in helping students graduate from high school and college, while also placing scholars in internship and career positions.  Interested students will have until February 12, 2018 to submit an application

Are You Recycling Properly?

Look what’s going on in your neighborhood!  Residents of the 1st Ward are recycling more and more each day.  However, only half of our bottles, cans and paper are being recycled.  Most of us mean well, but sometimes items that appear to be recyclable end up contaminating our blue carts.  Let’s change that, starting today.  Help us build a stronger culture of recycling in Chicago by:

  1. Building your knowledge.
  2. Take the quiz.
  3. Going to itsallyou.org and pledging to recycle.

What we do matters.
