Paramus police officer is shot following pursuit

PARAMUS — The Bergen County prosecutor's office says a Paramus police officer is listed in critical but stable condition after she was shot numerous times.

Officer Rachel Morgan was wearing her bulletproof vest. The two-year veteran of the force is 31 years old.

The prosecutor said in a news release today the officer was shot about 11 p.m. Sunday after pursuing Michael Carmody who was driving south on Route 17 in Paramus. As the Westwood resident got on the Garden State Parkway, he lost control of the vehicle. The prosecutor's office says the officer apparently was shot when she got to the scene.

Another officer fired at Carmody, hitting him several times. The 24-year-old is in critical condition.

Doctors are monitoring the injured police officer over the net 24 hours, according to a report by NorthJersey.com.

Morgan, who has been in the force for four years, previous worked for the New Jersey Institute of Technology Police Department, the report said.

The ramp to the southbound Garden State Parkway has reopened in both directions.
