This Week @ The Homeless Coalition

A dozen students, 2nd Year through Seniors, different majors, but a concentration of nursing majors, spent 4 days in Over-the-Rhine learning about Gentrification, Homelessness, Displacement, and solutions like Affordable Housing, Wage Fairness, and governmental policies.

Check out what's been going on lately with our amazing Member Organizations. Enjoy!

Exciting News for Residents of Alms Hill apartments!

Federal District Judge Timothy Black issued a decision Thursday afternoon granting Legal Aid’s motion for a preliminary injunction against HUD. This ruling sets aside HUD’s attempt to end the Section 8 housing assistance contract for the Alms Hill. As a result of Legal Aid’s advocacy, 120 low-income families will not be immediately forced to move from their affordable housing. Congratulations to Legal Aid Senior Attorney Virginia Tallent for delivering a compelling oral argument on behalf of the Alms Hill residents’ association. “This victory really belongs to the residents,” Virginia stated. “They are committed to preserving their homes and the continuous improvement of the Alms.”

Huge thank you to McAuley High School. Freshman participating in the annual Freshman Service Day prepared Spice Bags and Blessing Bags for our guests!!

This October we have a goal of collecting 300 NEW pillows for the individuals and families we serve. Bring a pillow, or donate $5 online to help us reach this goal!!!!

The reason we’re so committed to providing extracurricular activities for all students is because they bring people together. When students learn social skills and teamwork, the future of our communities looks bright!

Congratulations to NOFA awardees and thank you to the City of Cincinnati for the funding. At the press conference today the City highlighted the Scholar House project in Walnut Hills, a $12.1 million 44 unit LIHTC project with Child Care Center jointly being done by Model Group, Cincinnati Union Bethel, and Christ Church Cathedral.

Caracole opposes Issue 2.

The Ohio Drug Price Relief Act is a state-wide ballot initiative that will appear on the Ohio ballot in November of 2017. The initiative’s primary objective is to lower the cost of prescription drugs purchased by the State of Ohio.

As a nonprofit providing services for individuals with HIV/AIDS, we agree with the stated intent of this initiative and the necessity to address the cost of prescription drugs, particularly for people with chronic conditions. That said, we have many concerns with this ballot initiative, which are detailed on our website: http://caracole.org/about-us/caracole-opposes-issue-2/

The Homeless Coalition proudly stands by people fighting for their homes. We engage thousands each year through our education program, including our Speaker's Bureau. We publish Streetvibes bi-weekly to advocate for systems change and to be a voice and resource for so many. The money we get through the Kroger Community Rewards https://www.kroger.com/account/create/ program supports our efforts and our lobby, which provides mail service and refuge for dozens of people a day.

You can support us without spending a dime!

Please sign up your family's Plus card for the Homeless Coalition. You can check by looking at the bottom of your receipt. We had 44 families last report - we want to double it... It helps us, and it doesn't cost you anything or affect fuel points... sign up once, and then just use your card like normal when you shop... Thank you!

Note: You just need your alternative ID (phone number) and an email address to register. Once you do, search for the "Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless" and choose us.

Did you know that homelessness effects three million Americans annually and that 1.2 million of these report mental health issues? For homeless individuals with a mental illness, the daily struggle to meet life's basic necessities can sometimes be nearly impossible - leaving them vulnerable, stigmatized, and alone. Tender Mercies provides a safe supportive home at a much lower cost with a more successful outcome. One night at Tender Mercies costs just $40 compared to University Hospital at over $500 or jail at nearly $100.

When you support a Tender Mercies event like the Gala of Giving, you are helping homeless adults with mental illness break the cycle by providing hope and security.

To purchase your Gala of Giving tickets go to www.tendermerciesinc.org/gala-giving

Every October, we gather with nearly 300 of our dearest friends, partners, and supporters at Celebrating Our Beloved Community, a fundraising and awards dinner honoring the many varied voices that make up our beloved community.

Each year at this event, we seek a different “lens” through which we can view Over-the-Rhine. We’ve explored the meaning of “community” from the perspective of experts, both local and national. We’ve turned to the voices of our neighborhood, presenting them with the unique weaving of a story teller. Last year, we heard testimonies from residents, neighbors, and staff about Over-the-Rhine Community Housing and the significance of community.

We also present the “Building Our Beloved Community Award” to an individual and an organization that have played a significant role in helping us achieve our vision of quality stable housing for all in a socially, racially, and economically inclusive community. The individual award will be presented to OTR neighbor, Earl Hunt, and the organization award will be presented to Finance Fund.

Join Tender Mercies for its Annual Breakfast Meeting as we celebrate and reflect on the last year, and plan for the future!

Tuesday, October 31
8:30 - 10:00
