The Chinook School Board discussed their Literacy Monitoring Report at last night's meeting.

In the report, grades 3 and 6 were assessed with the Fountas and Pinnell model.

It centers more around learning to read all levels of literature and textbooks.

Since 2009, Grade 3's improved 24%, up to 88% of kids meeting or exceeding expectations, and Grade 6's improved 17% up to 77%.

Grade 9 was assessed with the RAD model which focuses more on reading to learn.

They saw a 6% improvement, up to 81%.

Kathy Robson, a curriculum coordinator with the School Division, says they hope Grade 9 average will continue to improve.

"We want our RAD results to continue to improve. So we want our grade 9 students to be able to read material and be able to apply strategies so they understand it. We're aiming for 90% with grades 3 and 6, so I'd say we're aiming for the same with grade 9," she said.

Robson also explains what the division will do to help students continue to improve.

"We will work with teachers and the assessments thinking what kind of changes could we make to improve the teaching so that the student results improve as well. Also, identifying what things the students need and seeing what the assessment is showing us, then putting those things into place," she said.

Robson and the Division have been happy with the results and improvement to date.
