The Twin Cities is getting its first rolled ice cream shop, and it’s on University Avenue in St. Paul.

Wonders Ice Cream (298 W. University Ave., St. Paul; 612-868-0096; wondersicecream.com) will celebrate its grand opening Friday, Aug. 18, with a 1 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Rolled ice cream, which is popular in Asia, is made on a frozen griddle. Workers place mix-ins on the griddle then pour liquid custard over it. The whole business is mixed and spread into a sheet, which is then made into rolls. The rolls are stuffed into a cup and topped with additional items like whipped cream, cookies, sprinkles or cereal.

Co-founders Joungkong Yang, 26, and Kit Houngnakhone, 27, said they tried rolled ice cream in southern California and were immediately hooked. They’ve been planning the shop and perfecting their technique for a little over a year and are ready for the public to try their product.

Wonders Ice Cream will have 20 flavors available, which range from the expected (vanilla, Oreo, strawberry) to a little exotic (lychee, Vietnamese coffee, Thai tea). They will offer dairy and dairy-free options for each flavor.
