Artillery Rounds Fired at South Korean Island

Around 50 artillery rounds have fallen on Yeonpyeong Island off South Korea’s West Sea coast around 2:30 this afternoon. The attack is continuing at the time of writing.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff released a statement moments ago, saying, “The artillery rounds were fired from North Korea’s Kaemeori Coastal Base,” adding, “Our navy returned fire with approximately 30 artillery rounds in accordance with battle regulations.”

According to YTN, a South Korean television news agency, two residents have been injured and the island is shrouded in smoke. According to one interviewee, there has been a power cut.

Residents of the island have been evacuated to local schools and shelters.
