The Government has been asked to compensate people whose land was taken by the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) in Bar-dege Division, Gulu district.

The call was made by the Bar-dege Division LC3 chairman, Patrick Oola Lumumba.

Lumumba said the UPDF 4th division's play ground, airfield and the piece of land where Kasubi Army Primary School and Gulu Army SS is located and part of the 4th division barracks, is community land.

He said some of the landlords have died without being compensated.

Gulu Resident District Commissioner Captain Santo Okot Lapolo, said there was  conflict over who should be compensated for the same piece of land, with some  pieces of land being claimed by more than two families.

Lapolo explained that it is the reason why the Government cannot carry out  compensations. He said it will only happen after the issues are resolved.

Lapolo was speaking during the Independence Celebrations at Kahunda Grounds in Gulu town recently.

The celebrations were postponed to allow district leaders to attend the national celebrations, which took place in Bushenyi on October 9.
