PLANTING POET TREES
Part of the Texas poet laureate’s job is to introduce the power of poetry to every corner of the state. And that’s a charge that asTexas Poet Laureate I take very seriously.  The Texas Poet Laureate post does not have any monetary award so any activities must be supported through fundraisers.

Tafolla is launching a project called Planting Poet Trees – sowing seeds of inspiration in Texas Public Schools. I'm looking for schools that are dealing with shrinking budgets and underfunded libraries that will engage in writing projects and poetry workshops.

An Advisory Committee will assist Dr. Tafolla in selecting the 20 schools to participate in the Planting Poet Trees program.

The State Poet Laureate will visit each school to provide an inspiring motivational speech about the power of education, a poetry reading, and one or two writing workshops. Through poetry readings, Dr. Tafolla can also share this message bilingually with the students, teachers, administrators, parents and family members.

The project needs funding for books, travel, lodging, and food. The budget is based on government approved rates.

Planting Poet Trees is a project helpful to students' education and inspires them to think differently. Poetry is often viewed as complex and difficult to understand, and in some ways this is true; each reader walks away with a different experience. While this can be tricky for teachers and students, teaching and writing poetry gives students a powerful tool to understand language, develop their speaking and writing skills, and connect to cultural or historical events.

We ask you to support Texas students who will benefit from an experience with Texas Poet Laureate Tafolla.
A distinguished UT professor endorses this project and says, "It should go without saying that there is absolutely no one more deserving of this support and opportunity than the “Poet Laureate for the State of Texas.” Among so many other things, Dr. Tafolla has authored over twenty books and is an inductee into the Texas Institute of Letters for outstanding literary achievement. ...Dr. Tafolla’s work is life saving. She is not only the best and most qualified person to propose an initiative like Planting Poet Trees, the condition of education in our state makes this, in my opinion, an even more urgent proposal."
