Sound Decisions: The Weekend’s Best Live Music

Category: music 93

sound decisions006What do you get when you cross a rock and roll troubadour, a pile of loop pedals, free-form noise and three of the city’s best live music venues? We have absolutely no idea.  Who would cross those things anyway? That’s just silly. A better question might be, what is there to do in Fredericton this weekend if you’re a fan of live music?  In case you’re wondering, there are several sounds to delight your refined palette. As always (as in every weekend of the year), there’s amazing music happening in this city. If Peter Coade was doing a music forecast, he’d say something like, “It’s gonna be an interesting mix of music this weekend folks. Grab your ear plugs and dress appropriately.” But again, that’s just silly.

Eaglesmith is a veteran of the music industry and at the same time is about as far away from actually participating in today’s music industry as one could be. Never operating within anyone’s boundaries, he continues to set the standard for independent artists everywhere. Stephen Lewis blew the flaps off the Stingray Rising Star Showcase tent during this year’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. A one man force to be reckoned with, he brings the party, the after party and after-after party with each performance. Joining Lewis for this show will be Moncton’s Jonah Haché and Peterborough, Ontario’s Garbageface. Expect loops, bleeps, bloops and a high-energy gathering like none other. P.A.R.T.Y.

From Halifax, Jessie Brown will probably blow your mind. Power-trio deluxe. No slouches here. In your face riffs bordering on the prog side of things. The new face of R&B? The Almighty Rhombus and Fredericton’s own elected officials, MAYORS will round out this solid lineup of evening entertainment. Fists in the air (as long as that fist isn’t really a fist, but instead a friendly open hand wave to all the nice people who have gathered here to play music for us)!

The Motorleague are on the brink of something big. After years of slugging it out largely on their own, the Moncton-based rock and roll machine have undergone a number of positive changes in the past couple of years.  In addition to growing tighter as a creative unit, the band have begun to firmly establish themselves on a national level thanks in part to their well-established East Coast work ethic and the support and opportunities presented to them since signing with Halifax-based Sonic Records.  Read more…
