A new 'front which will promote the boring of a tunnel between Malta and Gozo will be officially launched tomorrow. It has already set up a Facebook page.

Those leading the organisation are university students, who have invited Labour MP Franco Mercieca and Nationalist MP Chris Said to speak at the launch..

The front said its purpose will be "to bring together those Maltese and Gozitans who believe, that in the best interest of the citizens a tunnel is to be built between Malta and Gozo."

Meanwhile, Gozo Minister Anton Refalo, speaking in a TV interview over the weekend, said that while he is in favour of building a tunnel, it needs to be integrated with plans to improve the transport situation in Malta, possibly by going for a bigger project which would also encompass the building of road tunnels under traffic choke points in Malta.

He also argued that if the proposal was made subject to a referendum, the votes of Gozitans needed to be given more weighting because using the Gozo tunnel would be a necessity for them.
