Jeremy Corbyn is here to stay as Labour's leader, one of his critics has admitted.

Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, said Mr Corbyn's opponents in the party should give up any hope of getting rid of him, because he's just too popular with party members.

But although she appealed for unity, she also said she believed there was no chance of Labour winning a general election with Mr Corbyn as leader.

In fact, it would take so long for Labour to win power again that she probably wouldn't be an MP any more by the time it happened, she said.

And she revealed that she would go into the next election urging Birmingham Yardley voters to vote for her personally rather than thinking about the Labour leader.

Ms Phillips was speaking at an event organised by The Times at Labour's annual conference in Liverpool.

She said: "The people who are anti-Jeremy have lost the argument."

And she said it was “definitely possible” that Mr Corbyn would stay on as leader even if Labour lost the next general election.

But Ms Phillips said she would have to ask voters to support her personally, because they would never choose Mr Corbyn to be Prime Minister.

“I am going to have to find a way of coming down from the fact I have no confidence in Jeremy. What I’ll say on the doorstep is ‘Jeremy Corbyn’s not on the ballot’."

And she said it was unlikely Labour would be in power during her lifetime as an MP.

"At the moment, as of today, I can’t see that I will ever be in the position where I am in the chamber of the House of Commons on the other side."
