The fashion industry has long been criticized for lacking diversity in terms of race, body type and age, but with the help of urges by the CFDA to push for inclusion, that stigma is starting to change.

The Fashion Spot recently released its biannual diversity report, analyzing the ethnic backgrounds, body types and ages in the 8,832 model appearances and 299 shows in the Spring 2017 fashion month. While white models still dominated the runways, over one fourth of models were women of color, the highest percentage it's ever been in recent history: 74.6 percent of models were white and 25.4 percent were of color. The dominance of white models has been on a steady decline for the past year, as the percentage was 75.3 percent for the Fall 2016 shows and 77.6 percent for Spring 2016.

NYFW hosted the most models of color, and the most diverse shows were Yeezy Season 4, Kimora Lee Simmons, Ashish, Brandon Maxwell and Telfar in that order. Three out of the ten top models this season were non-white, including runway favorite Lineisy Montero.

New York's runways also featured the most plus-size models in September. Brands like Christian Siriano, Tome and Tracy Reese cast curvy women in thier shows. Ultimately, however, only 16 out of the nearly-3,000 model appearances were by plus-size women—that's only two more than the 14 last season.

Small victories were also won for the transgender community. Although trans models were only seen ten times this season, that's two more than in Fall 2016 fashion month. Four of them appeared in the Chromat presentation together.

As for age, women aged 50 and up were most common this season than "in any other season in recent memory," according to The Fashion Spot. Models of a certain age made up 0.15 percent of the models this season in New York, London and Milan (Paris didn't participate). Perhaps the most memorable appearance was by Lauren Hutton at Bottega Veneta, who closed the show arm-in-arm with Gigi Hadid, showing how diversity in age can co-exist on the runway.

Here's to hoping that diversity—whether in ethnicity, size, sexuality or age—continues to improve in the seasons to come.
