Shekhar Kapur's making music now!
Midival Punditz is known for their penchant for experimentation. When the Asian Underground scene in the UK started mixing Indian sounds with electronic music, Midival were one of the first to do it in India. Since the past two years they’ve formed a strong alliance with Karsh Kale, one of the pioneers of east-meets-west music.
The trio are now embarking on a whole new theme mixing poetry with groovy beats.
And the poet is yet another crossover specialist, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. Their first track, Today is up on their Soundcloud page, and there is more to come
Over the next six months the awesome foursome will release an entire album of music that combines these two art forms. Karsh Kale talks to us about this interesting collaboration.
How did this unique theme come about?
We were producing this show in Delhi which Shekhar was directing. We spent two to three days in the studio recording with Shekhar. He enjoyed the process of working with us and wanted to do more.
There was no formalities, no agents or no presentations. We were just there, doing this show for him. We were inspired by the way in which he presents his work. Putting things to music, hearing it back, analysing, the process was a lot of fun.

So while doing this we mixed Shekhar’s poetry with our music and it worked really well. We went to three different cities after that show, and the piece sort of just happened.
We are looking to bring the most poetic bit out, whether it is through the music or through the words. The first track, Today has hardly any lyrics, but the next one, Goodbye My Love has him reciting throughout. Why release it on Soundcloud instead of going the formal CD/ online release route?
We want it to be a people’s project. We are going the social networking route as opposed to a record company because we want to see what people think about the music. Soundcloud has a lot of DJs and it’s a great site for working on your music adn getting feeback. It caters to people in the scene.
