Known as the “Pompeii of the Caribbean,” the island of Montserrat’s volcanic eruption in the mid-1990s has left Antigua’s beaches with a beautiful ombre of volcanic ash and black sand. Escambron Beach, also known as “La Ocho,” is a local spot offering surfers the chance to catch some swell while nearby coral reefs maintain calmer waters for snorkelers. Tall palm trees create cozy shade for a post-paddle nap or picnic table lunch. A short walk on the beach will lead you to Escambron Battery, a small fortification built at the end of the 18th century.

Only 15 miles long and 8 miles wide, Barbuda offers secluded pink- and white-sand beaches like Spanish Point, a snorkeling retreat and North Beach, a tranquil, unmarred haven lined with lush greenery. You can see where the impossibly blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea meet and spot (and hear) Magnificent Frigate birds who inhabit the island.

Over 400-years old, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a World Heritage Site and a National Park, built in the 1500s to defend San Juan, then a Spanish colonial port city. Garitas (dome-covered sentry boxes) line the walls and the island’s first lighthouse sits atop of the original citadel. The lighthouse is not original, however. It was destroyed during an 1898 bombardment by the United States and then replaced by the US in 1908 with the structure you see today.
