The Pharisees challenged Jesus Christ and His authority. Christ responded with an amazing answer that points back to the first commandment.

[Steve Myers] Are the 10 Commandments in the New Testament? Absolutely, they are. They’re mentioned over and over again in various forms – not so much in the exact same words that you would find in Exodus or Deuteronomy, but you will find those commandments mentioned in various ways throughout. Let’s take a look at a number of these.

First of all, with commandment number one – a beautiful place to start. Christ Himself was asked about what is the great commandment of the law? And in this section of scripture, the Pharisees, the lawyers, the leaders of the day were challenging Christ and challenging His authority. And they were trying to catch Him and trying to trick Him up – trip Him up, in order to try to expose Him as some kind of fraud. But Christ had an amazing answer as He answered their question, “What is the great commandment of the law?” and you can find this over in Matthew 22:37. Here’s what Christ said. He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.” And so that points right back to Exodus 20 or Deuteronomy 5 – that “you shall have no other gods before Me.” That is first and foremost.

Of course, the Pharisees had all kinds of rules and regulations, and yet they couldn’t trick Christ. He pointed them right back to the ultimate foundation of God Himself. “Have no other gods before Me” – that’s exactly what Christ said, and He added even more, to love God with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your mind. That is so critical, and what a wonderful place to begin.

We’ll talk more about the commandments on our next BT Daily. We’ll see you then.

Excellent idea to go through the Ten Commandments. To prove that they are still in effect in the NT. They are also all magnified in the NT. This one showed a magnification to the first commandment. Christ did not do away, as we are commonly taught, but magnified them.

i believe that he was also summarizing the first four commandment when he told the pharisees that.
