Let's show the government how to spend the money that we earn more effectively.

The government intend to spend $122 million tax payer dollars on a non compulsory, non binding postal vote to ask Australians whether people of the same sex should be allowed to be married.

Instead they could allow a conscience vote in parliament on marriage equality and it could be over and done with at no extra cost than we already pay the politicians to do their jobs.

The big (ridiculous) thing with this is that even if they get a 'yes' result on the postal vote then they still have to pass it in the lower and upper houses by allowing a conscience (free) vote. So the postal vote is, frankly, a complete waste of money, not to mention immoral.

I am a passionate same sex marriage advocate, but I don't believe that any of my fellow Australians actually think that it is reasonable or necessary to have an expensive vote on marriage equality.

I propose instead of having an effectively useless postal vote, that the intended $122 million of OUR money should be put into services for Australia's homeless people.

If the government can find the money to hold the vote then why can't they find the money for our homeless?

We have all seen Martin Place in Sydney on TV, and that's just the tip of the iceburg. Imagine spending our Winter with nothing and no shelter.

If you live in a city then you see people living rough all of the time. Does it make you feel at a loss and you wish there was more help for them on so many levels?

We need more shelters, mental health & health services, job service providers specifically for homeless people complete with grants for each client from the government to assist with appropriate clothing for interviews, resumes, amenities etc.

I believe that the majority of Australians just want our pollies to do their jobs and for the government to allow a conscience vote on marriage equality and stop continuously putting time wasting road blocks up, it's an insult to our intelligence.

Would a fiscally responsible government even consider spending $122 million on a non compulsory poll when people are starving and freezing in our own country?
