They'll still be serving the classics.

Just in time to lead Los Angeles’ recent charge back into the Southern food spotlight, the iconic Harold & Belle’s is going down for a quick facelift. Known for its po’ boys, jambalaya, and exuberant charm, the longtime Jefferson Park spot is practically overdue for a little nip and tuck. The restaurant first opened nearly 50 years ago, and hasn’t had extensive work done since the 1980s.

The building itself won’t actually be shuttered during the remodel, which kicks off on Tuesday, May 12. Guests will be able to enjoy the recently renovated event space The Peacock Lounge on site, which has a full bar and massive HD TV screen for showing Clippers playoff games, while Harold & Belle’s own food truck will be parked on site, serving a highlight reel of their most popular dishes.

The Legaux family, which has owned Harold & Belle’s for three generations, says that construction should wrap up in July. In the meantime, truncated hours will have the Peacock Room open Wednesday through Sunday only, with occasional one-off nights for live music and the like. Other big events, like their massive annual crawfish boil, are also still in the works.

When it does reopen, Harold & Belle’s will have undergone a near complete rebuild, and hopefully emerged with a restaurant space more befitting their reputation as one of Los Angeles' best Creole restaurants. When the construction curtains are finally pulled back, expect more private event space, a separate area for live entertainment along with a brand new bar, and updated decor throughout.
