7 things to watch out in Disney’s Newsies

Globe LIVE and 9 Works Theatrical brings this hit Broadway musical to Manila!

Looking for some fun in Metro Manila? Here’s something to dazzle you as Globe LIVE and 9 Works Theatrical gives you a memorable production of Disney’s Newsies. The musical is raking rave reviews and filling the Globe Iconic Store BHS Amphitheater with packed audiences. According to Broadwayworld.com,”Globe Live and 9 Works Theatrical have created a triple-threat extravaganza that rivals some of the best local productions seen in recent memory.”

Newsies is a Broadway musical that is based on a 1992 Disney film. Set in New York City, it is loosely inspired by the real-life newsboy strike that happened in 1899, wherein a number of boys started a strike demanding improvement on labor practices in the newspaper business.

Newsies is one of Broadway’s most difficult shows to produce because it demands its actors to be able to sing, dance, and act. We were able to pull it off with 19 out of 19 rave reviews and the loudest cheers and standing ovations for every performance. It’s a show that’s not to be missed,” Senior Advisor for Creative Marketing & Multimedia Businesses Joe Caliro remarked.

To make your Newsies experience more enjoyable, watch out for these seven things in the musical:

1. The David and Goliath plot

The story of Newsies is based on the 1899 historic strike in New York City. At that time, a group of young boys rallied for fair wage from Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, two of the largest newspaper publishers in the US during this period. The result of the strike, both in history and in the play, inspired the audience to fight for what’s right, no matter how big the foe. Since this happened on 21st of July, the production of Newsies coincides with the 118th anniversary of the newsboys’ strike event.

2. The catchy music

The story is conveyed through the catchy songs that were developed by the award-winning composer Alan Menken, the one who is also behind the music in Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, and a lot more. Newsies earned a Tony Award for Best Original Score. To give justic for such feat, Globe LIVE brings together stellar cast led by Gian Magdangal as strike leader Jack Kelly, Jef Flores as Davey, Danielle Chopin as journalist Katherine Plumber, and Pinky Marquez as performer Medda Larkin. Some of the songs you’ll want to hear are “Seize the Day” and “King of New York”!

3. The incredible choreography

When they claim that Newsies is one of the hardest shows to produce, they weren’t joking. The Broadway production was recognized with a Tony Award for Best Choreography, which is rightfully so, given that it fuses ballet, hiphop, tap, jazz, gymnastics, and more dances into the musical. In preparation for the cast, Globe LIVE set up Training Ground, wherein choreographer PJ Rebullida provided a series of sessions with the cast to train them sing, dance, and act to become triple-treats. 4. The live orchestra

A live orchestra provides lively music to accompany the singing, acting, and dancing, which ups the ante, making the musical an even more electrifying show. Although the band is hidden at the back, they still make their presence felt through their beats and music, enticing the audience to dance and clap along.

5. Jack Kelly and Katherine Plumber’s love story

Many of us wants to have some romantic twist and a love angle never fail to thrill the audience. In Newsies, you’ll find this between Kelly and Plumber. Besides going against the country’s top publishers, Kelly is also pursuing Plumber, an intelligent and beautiful woman who comes from an established family. Sparks fly between them and the audience can’t resist swooning over their romance.

6. The magnificent set

Globe LIVE and 9WT built an astounding set at Globe ICONIC Store’s outdoor amphitheater, where the three-level scaffolding and large cogs are moved around between scenes. It was a perfect setup for the actors, who utilized the stage with their pirouettes and backflips. Projection mapping is also used to create the classic turn-of-the-century NYC backdrop, adding authenticity and ambiance to the set.

7. The cheering audience

The show begins with Caliro entering the stage to encourage the audience to cheer and have fun during the entire performance and go beyond polite clapping. With the outdoor setting, who can resist such an invitation? The outcome? The audience go wild after each number, creating an exciting and vibrant atmosphere that redefine the Filipino theater experience, something that you should not miss.
