Staying in Tune

I’ve always wanted to become a doctor.  The journey in becoming one was quite overwhelming because of the preparation, dedication and sacrifices it entailed, but it’s all worth it.

However, unknown to my patients, colleagues and my own family are the struggles and internal battles I experience every time I go on duty at the hospital as a Neurosurgery resident. The responsibilities, expectations, requirements and the inherent pressures of brain surgery constantly challenge my physical, emotional, and more so, my mental capacity. Far too often, I am left with a sense of helplessness and feelings of inadequacy.

These are the times when I get desperate in finishing my evening rounds so I could squeeze myself in a small space in the attic of Makati Medical Center. And at that private place, be able to pray and worship with my flute and saxophone. These are my redeeming moments. They help me keep a sound mind and a cheerful heart that are in tune with the Lord.  Through a personal time of worship, I am able to keep things in right perspective and acknowledge God for all that He is.

Worship helps me offer and present my thanksgiving, and to declare my utmost praise, trust and reverence to God. Worship allows me to pour out the joy of my heart and to express my deepest prayer that words cannot convey. In Psalm 33, the psalmist invites the people to honor, worship and praise God, the creator and shaper of history; trustworthy and faithful deliverer of those who wait and hope in Him.

1 Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.
Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

Our daily work and diligence lie to waste when we carry out our tasks out of tune, in disharmony with God, the giver of life. Let us celebrate His goodness and His wonderful love for us! Let us make time to stay in tune.

My prayer is for us to always be sensitive in staying in tune with God, regardless of our busy schedules or our careers. May our daily work and efforts always bring honor and glory to Him.

Tunefully yours,
