Marlins player’s rare baserunning blunder costs him a home run

Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto hit a two-run home run during Monday’s game against the Brewers. He was credited with an RBI single.

In a rare baserunning mistake, Realmuto passed Marcell Ozuna on his home run trot while Ozuna was returning to first base to tag. The entire Brewers team noticed the mistake, and they alerted the umpiring crew. We almost never see this mistake happen in baseball, as the home run trot is so easy that it shouldn’t be messed up.

But the Brewers were definitely ready to call out Realmuto’s illegal advance because this somehow wasn’t the first time the Brewers had seen it happen this season. The umpires missed Randal Grichuk passing a baserunner during an April Cardinals-Brewers game. Grichuk kept his home run, but the baseball gods were kind to the Brewers this time.

Milwaukee challenged the play, and Realmuto was ruled out at second. A two-run home run became an RBI single.
