Every year, 1.5 Million animals are euthanized in shelters across the United States. Many of these are killed because there just isn't space for them. And many could be saved if no-kill rescues could get to them in time.
What you may not realize is the number of volunteers and the amount of work it takes to get a dog to its forever home. Many dogs in rescues come from open admissions shelters, some from across the nation. Organizing transports, fosters and volunteers takes a lot of time and effort. With only email and texting to connect people right now, the system is clunky, flawed and slow. Plus, reliance on word-of-mouth makes it so some rescues are never seen by the right people to help them.
The Homeward Bound Rescue Network will offer a new, digital solution. It will create an online community with easy-to-navigate profiles, animal alerts by location, breed, and "danger level", and simple ways to connect, so each rescue can expand its network. All the profiles will be operated by the rescues themselves, so they will ALWAYS remain in control of their information.
I also aim to include profiles for volunteers, so you can find new ways to help in animal rescue, whenever help is needed. Think about it: the more these rescues and volunteers work together, the more animals we can save.
Don’t take my word for it. My research survey has received an overwhelmingly positive response. Reactions from rescues include, “We need a service such as this,” “I love this idea,” and “You are my newest hero.” Over 75% of the rescues we’ve surveyed want to be involved in the network already. With over 350 Animal Welfare Organizations excited about this platform, I hope you’ll take a moment and consider donating.
