About the authors
William David Noe has been writing for decades. He lives in NW Missouri with his wife and cats. He has two grown daughters. He attended MWSC and has worked as a landlord and handyman since the 1980s. Since 2020, he has also been a wood worker, specializing in carving pipes.
Starting with poetry and short stories, he eventually graduated to novellas and novels, comic books and children’s books, and even a nonfiction book about home renting.
His Trade of the Tricks novel series is about a bizarre group of monster hunters who sometimes are worse than the monsters they hunt. It is a humor/adventure/horror series that is four books long.
In 2016, he co-founded InDELLible Comics, where they publish magazine sized, full color comics and short story collections for all ages. The foundation of the company is the characters used by the now defunct Dell Comics that went out of business in the 70s. This includes many Public Domain and Orphaned characters, including Lobo, the very first African-American character to have his own comic book.
In 2021, he co-founded Dark Sister, a magazine sized black and white mature readers comic that focuses on the bizarre and macabre.
He has several poetry collections, and believes that poetry should be practiced by all writers, no matter what they write. Even if the poetry is not published or ever seen by anyone else, it is an important writing tool to increase a writer’s vocabulary and manipulation of the language. David’s poetry is intended to be read aloud.
For 22 years, he published a small 8 page monthly pamphlet entitled, TYPO Magazine. This proved to be an excellent proving ground for his unique style of storytelling. It enabled him to hone his short story craft and allowed him to produce several short story compilations of many genres. His books are published through Amazing Things Press, where he now works as an editor.
His wacky humor can be seen throughout most of his books, but none so keen as the absolutely bonkers, Voices In My Pen. His children’s book, The Cat Spat is just the first of many he has planned, and his work can be found in several anthologies, along with fellow writers.
He has also written a super hero fantasy novel (ZaZa the Mystic) and a western pulp novel (Alabaster Kid) that bend the genres in ways both unexpected and unexpected.

As a kid I wanted to be a mad scientist when I grew up. Not just any old regular scientist but a mad scientist who made things that would allow me to take over the world. I later switched to wanting to be a writer. I got my BS degree in Natural Science and became a science and math teacher. After 32 years of teaching I got to retire. Now I get to live a little of my teen age dream by becoming a writer.
'Author' is not a term I would apply to myself but I've done artwork for several comic book anthologies so 'contributing artist' is probably more apt. But, until Amazon adds Contributing Artist Central, I'll be an author. I'm a Christian first with artist, husband and everything else after.

There are many more stories and characters in this issue, such as Rob Rian of the Sky Police, Dr. Kildare, the excellent western strip Lobo, Captain Tornado, Marvin Monster and more. Just about something for everyone. A great reintroduction to these great characters with a hint of things to come. I liked it! I plan to share it with some of my grand kids because they just don't make comics like this any more. I also recommend it! VALUE: In an age when a normal comic book costs $3.99 (right now in Sept. 2017) for about 22 pages of story, Popular Comics delivers almost three times that amount for about $12. So, price per page is right on the money (and a little better because this is a square-bound comic and not just a single-issue "floppy," as they are called in the trade.
QUALITY: Print quality and binding are easily within normal standards. That is to say, they are VERY GOOD.
CONTENT: Now, the content, as you would expect in any anthology, has variable quality. The lead Space Cadets story and the Lobo (an African-American adventurer, not DC's weird rip-off of Wolverine) western are the clear highlights of the issue, but "Adapt" and "Rod Rian" are also very good. Even the stuff I would consider to be just average is very good. "Marvin Monster" was an adorable flashback to the funny animal comics I still love. "Jigger and Mooch" was similarly cute, and probably one of the more inventive tales in the book because it really did a great job of capturing that old-school magic. Speaking of which, "Captain Tornado" very successfully captured the old-school vibe. Also, the coloring was nice (loved the two-tone work on Rod Rian" and the more nuanced coloring of "Mind Matters." But a few of the stories were a little over-saturated for my taste. Not to say the coloring was bad on the "Space Cadets" story, but it was just a little too bright on the slick, white paper this is printed on. I suspect that on old newsprint, this would have looked amazing.
SUMMARY: So there you have it, folks: This is a REALLY GOOD AND FUN BOOK. I enjoyed reading it (ain't gonna lie, sometimes I take a soak in the tub and these stories are the perfect length to enjoy as the bubbles tickle my toes). I knocked off one star from my rating because there are a few issues with the typesetting and lettering. It's all VERY legible (thank you guys, my aging eyes can't read micro type anymore). But some of the lettering choices in the comics would be better, and the one-page "Kona" story needed an experienced typesetter to fit in that last line of text so it didn't dip into the page margin. If you enjoy old comics that are FUN to read and appropriate for kids, who should be reading more than they are nowadays (gosh-darn-it, I'm getting old).
I also was pleased to find out that buying the print version also gave me a free copy for my tablet! That was a very pleasant surprise.
Dan Reed and Mike Matthew's short 2 part "Teenage Space Cadets" tale gets the ball rolling in grand style!
This tale sets the stage for the many and varied stories in the book, a throw back to the old style anthology books of the 40's and 50's -- it's predecessor the original Popular Comics. The stories run from Deb. Perry's Fluffy and Mervin funny animals to Dave Noe and Kent Clark's horror story "The Deadline" with stops in the old west and the far future tossed in for good measure.
The stories feature new tales of old Dell Comics characters (Public Domain) interspersed with new to great effect.
The art is uniformly excellent, the writing is equally as good, the production of the book is absolutely fantastic!
The only small thing I would change is with the text story (yes it has one, and a good one too!), would love to have future stories spread over two pages and in a larger font to give my tired old eyes a bit of a break!
This is worth every penny and I look forward to many more issues!!
I'd love to see more of the actual Dell characters, omitting the amateurish cartoons to expand the stories. Please give us more than just a few panels of Dell's Dracula and Frankenstein characters. I have the original comics, and they are among the best bad characters ever.
I really, really want to give this more than three stars, but I'm being honest.

The Fab 4 (teenagers who can transfer their minds into super-powered android bodies) and the Weird Warriors (modern superhero versions of Dracula and Frankenstein and a black-clad secret agent code-named Werewolf) only appear in a lame three page story, and Phantasmo (the big guy in the yellow cape) only shows up in a POEM for goodness sake.
The humour strips are the worst kind of amateur, and while the Marvin Monster meets Millie the Lovable Monster story manages perfect likenesses of the characters it really isn't all that funny.
On the plus side the Tom Corbett, Space Cadet story that opens the book isn't that bad, although since the characters are all radically redesigned there doesn't seem much point in calling it "Tom Corbett", especially since Corbett was a licensed property and can't really be considered a specifically Dell character anymore than Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse.
The Western story starring the black cowboy Lobo is pretty good, but considering that he was the first African-American character to debut in his own comic book, he pretty much better be.
The best of the bunch is the B&W "Rod Rian of the Sky Police" strip in the back of the book that manages to recapture the style and feel of a good Golden Age sci-fi story.
All in all I have to give InDELLible Comics a failing grade on this one. If you want something good along the same line, check out some of the Charlton Neo stuff available like "Unusual Suspense", "Super-Gorillas vs. the All-Star Victory Legion" and, of course, "Charlton Arrow".
