Cross Country Set to Race at Rider Invite

9.13.17 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country

PHILADELPHIA – After a week off, Temple men's and women's cross country will head to Pennington, N.J. for the Rider Invite on Friday, Sept. 15. Both teams are coming off first place finishes at the Temple Invitational on Sept. 5. The women will toe the line at 5 p.m. followed by the men's race at 5:45 p.m.

Scouting Men's Cross Country
>Returning in 2017 for Temple is the squad's top-finisher from 2016, graduate student Marc Steinsberger. The Eslingen, Germany native won two individual titles last season at the Rider Invitational and the Leopard Invitational. Steinsberger also finished in the top-10 at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships coming in at No. 9 with a time of 24:48.4.
>Also returning for the Owls are sophomores Kevin Lapsansky and Zach Seiger. Both were the first in program history to compete at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships. Out of 39 runners, Lapsansky finished 18th (27:51) and Seiger came in just behind in 21st (28:05).
> At the Temple Invitational, Steinsberger (26:10.6) and freshman Kristian Jensen (26:10.7) crossed the finish line arm in arm in second and third places, respectively.
>Men's cross country is led by co-captain's Steinsberger and junior Jonathan Condly.

Scouting Women's Cross Country
>Temple women's cross country will enter Friday's competition ranked No. 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after its performance at the Temple Invitational. At the start of the season, the squad was ranked 15. The five-place bump was the week's largest jump of any team in the nation.
>Sophomore Millie Howard was temple's top finisher at the Temple Invitational with a time of 22:08.1. The Yorkshire England native enters only her second season running cross country. Howard placed in a top 10 in three of six races in 2016, capping it off with a top-20 finish at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship. Howard also set a record in 1000m during the 2017 indoor track season. She then qualified for the outdoor NCAA East Regional preliminaries for her performance in the 800-meter race at the American outdoor championships.
>Veteran Katie Leisher also returns this season for the Owls.  In 2016, Leisher earned four top-five finishes and left conference championships with All-Conference honors for her top-15 performance.
>Women's cross country is led by co-captains Leisher and senior Katie Pinson.

Of Note
>Last season the men's team finished fifth among the eight participating teams at the Rider Invitational. Steinsberger took first place overall (24:39.4)
> In 2016, the women's team placed fourth out of nine programs at the meet. Leisher and Howard finished in fourth and sixth places, respectively.
>The women's field consists of Rider (host), Saint Joseph's, LIU Brooklyn, Niagra, and Cumberland County.
>The men's field consists of Rider, Saint Joseph's, Rutgers, Niagra, and Cumberland County.
