Melinda Doolittle is going back to roots for VeggieTales. Last week, the American Idol Season 6 finalist voiced a new character, Cassie Cassava, for the animated series' upcoming Easter DVD, VeggieTales: Easter in Crisper County.
"I absolutely loooove VeggieTales," Melinda says. "I used to be a nanny, so I watched VeggieTales all the time and thought, 'Something about this is for adults, too.' Those kids probably got tired of me singing all those songs."
Easter in Crisper County is scheduled for a March 5, 2011, release. The next VeggieTales DVD comes out Oct. 2. Called It's a Meaningful Life, it features Larry the Cucumber playing a character named Stewart (get it?) who finds meaning in life after football.
When she's not giving voice to starchy roots, Melinda says she's writing for her next album. "I'm spending all my days in writing appointments," she says.
Nashville-based Brian Mansfield began writing about music for USA TODAY in 1997 and took over Idol Chatter just before the start of Season 8. He co-authored Make Me a Star: Industry Insiders Reveal How to Make It in Music, and while he has never auditioned for American Idol, he did sing Boot Scootin' Boogie at Disney World's American Idol Experience the day the attraction opened (he lost).
