the project

Let's keep perfectly good stuff out of the landfill and spend some quality community time together at the same time!

At a Repair Cafe, volunteer fixers gather at an event with hands and tools at the ready, and the community is invited to bring items in need of repair.

An antidote to planned obsolescence, Repair Cafes are coming up with new and creative ways to salvage perfectly usable things. They are not only great events to get your clothing, textiles, appliances, small machinery, and electronic devices fixed -- the very nature of their collaborative and community-oriented learning spirit contains the antidote of our modern-day throw-away mentality.

We throw away vast amounts of stuff, even things with almost nothing wrong and, which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. Society doesn’t always show much appreciation for the people who still have practical knowledge of how to repair, and are often left standing on the sidelines. The Repair Café changes all that. People who might otherwise be sidelined are getting involved again. Valuable practical knowledge is getting passed on. Things have a longer functional life span these days and don’t have to be thrown away. This reduces the volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products.

The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light and to appreciate their value, which helps change people’s mindset. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society. But most of all, the Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be - and how easy it often is.

Repair Cafes are a relatively new concept, conceived by a Dutch journalist, and debuted three years ago in Amsterdam. There are now 26 Cafes in the United States, mostly in New York, California, and Massachusetts - and it's time to bring it to Central Virginia!

The Cville TimeBank will partner with local organizations to hold two Repair Cafes between October 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016. Location and other details to follow!

****** The date is set for our first Repair Café event!! *****

On Sunday, November 15, 2015, you are invited to bring your broken stuff to Portico at IX downtown from 3pm to 5pm. We're gathering a team of 30+ volunteers to fix household appliances, clothing, jewelry, toys, bikes and more. Want to help out at the event? Please click the volunteer link on the right.

To stay up to date on all the event details, please follow Cville TimeBank on Facebook or join the TimeBank mailing list at cvilletimebank.com.

the steps

The Cville TimeBank will hold two Repair Cafe events between October 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016. We'll join forces with community organizations to participate and spread the word. The entire Charlottesville community will be invited to bring broken items to be repaired.

why we're doing it

Repair Cafes – as they continue and grow – will encourage a community shift from a discard to a repair/reuse/recycle mentality; they will reduce landfill waste; they will build community by setting the stage for warm, easy, helpful connections with others; and they will share skills and build confidence.

DOWN TO THE WIRE!!!

Four days left to raise over $1000!! ACK!

Plans and enthusiasm for the first Repair Cafe, to be held on Sunday afternoon, November 15, are ramping up.

If we could just get this last little bit of fundraising behind us, it'll be full steam ahead on WHAT can be repaired and WHO can repair it and HOW do we feed you snacks and WHERE the music goes and HOW will we contain our excitement about the whole thing??!!

So tell your friends: jump in there with $5 or $10 and help us fix all the things!

Thanks!

The Repair Cafe Team

Fabulous Response!

All, we are floored by the community's enthusiasm for the Repair Cafe idea! We actually reached our financial goal so quickly that we are emboldened to think a little bigger.

So we've now increased our budget slightly to include more outreach to neighborhoods and more funds for repair parts. We also discovered our insurance budget was inadequate so we've corrected that as well.

Please consider passing the word to anyone you know interested in improving the trash to treasures ratio!

Cheers!

The Repair Cafe Team!

HURRAH! 50% there!!!

Apparently Charlottesville loves the idea of a Repair Cafe! Our new coordinator, Ann Marie Hohenberger, is already hard at work with a volunteer team to find a central location and plan for the first event. We're so fortunate to have won this matching grant to help get two Repair Cafes up and open. Ann Marie will work 100-150 hours organizing both events. Having a dedicated paid coordinator is vital to making this a successful, inclusive event that reaches the whole community and fixes lots of things!!

Woooo HOOOO!

Thanks to some generous, efficient, and motivated individuals, we've raised 40% of our goal already! Now that the campaign has gone public, we're off to a great start to bring Repair Cafes to Charlottesville!

There are only 24 days to go, however, so pass the word: a little donation from many people = a successful funding-match campaign and the first Repair Cafe!

Our best appreciation for your support!
