Jim Ray Hart, a power-hitting 3B who played for the SF Giants in the 1960s and DH’d for the Yanks in 1973 passed away a few days ago at the age of 74.
Hart played for the Giants from 1963-1973, and topped 30 HR in 1964 and 1966. His power was overlooked on a team that had Mays, McCovey and Cepeda. He was runnerup to Dick Allen for NL ROY in 1964, was an All-Star in 1966 and three times got MVP consideration.
From 1964-1968 he hit 139 HR, an average of 28 a year.
Early in 1973, he was dealt to the Yankees, and he became a primary DH for them, often platooning with Ron Blomberg. In 114 games for the Yanks in 1973, he hit .254-13-52, OPS+ 112.
He went 1 for 19 in 10 games in 1974 for the Yanks and never played in the majors again.
He also played some LF and RF.
His 162 g. average was .278-24-83, OPS+ 127. He went 0 for 5 in his only postseason, when the 1971 Giants made the NLCS.
