Lansing, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags within the State Capitol Complex and the 11th District of the House of Representatives to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, July 2 in recognition of former state Rep. Julie Plawecki, who died Saturday, June 25.
“Rep. Plawecki's passing is a shock to us all and Michigan has lost a fine and dedicated public servant,” Snyder said. “Sue and I are keeping her husband, her children and her entire family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Plawecki was a first-term Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives from the 11th district, which includes the cities of Dearborn Heights, Garden City, and Livonia. Prior to serving in the House, she taught math, science, and religion at both the elementary and secondary levels and worked at St. Robert Bellarmine in Redford, coaching the school’s Science Olympiad team. Plawecki is survived by her husband Mark and their three daughters.
The funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 2 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Divine Child, 1055 N. Silvery Lane, Dearborn, Mich.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations of the 11th District are also encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Sunday, July 3.
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
