DSH Perfumes Lilas de Minuit (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2018~ Perfume Review + Moonstruck Draw

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz smelling lilacs

I keep waiting for a scent created by Perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz that I WON’T like, but it just never happens. 2017 saw the premiere of her new range called “Flowers for Men” and the first in the series Il Marinaio Da Capri (The Sailor From Capri) was a top-notch honeysuckle perfume which was one of my favorite releases for the year. Now with DSH Perfumes Lilas de Minuit, Dawn revisits lilac, this time as a dark-as-night chypre which will delight both men and women alike. Inspired by Coty’s classic and first-of-its-kind 1917 Chypre,  the soon to be released  DSH Perfumes Lilas de Minuit is one of three new Lunar inspired scents being introduced in the DSH canon on the 28th of this month.

Worshipping the Moon via aol.com

Since the beginning of time the moon has fascinated, compelled and drawn humankind to its inherent mystery and beguiling beauty. What is it about this “giant space orb” that brings us out into the dark to sing, howl, dance, celebrate, pray, venerate, and “act like lunatics?” In creating a perfume to honor the moon at midnight when it is at times both brightest and darkest, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz perfectly explores this duality by bringing forth a fragrance that feels almost as unknowable as the moon, yet also familiar in a way that connects to the deepest well of our psyche. DSH Perfumes Lilas de Minuit is a fragrance that through its development seems to follow the various aspects of the moon itself.

Opening with a bright and spicy citrus and pepper, the scent is at once new and fresh as the new moon; speaking to new beginnings, plans yet to be made, and pregnant possibility. Like the moon as it journeys towards its zenith, the oakmoss lends its earthy and fusty notes, made lighter by the lilac honoring once again the juxtaposition of dark and light. Incense introduces a spiritual aspect as if to carry prayers and meditations up to the black-as-onyx sky above.

As the moon unfolds, so does Lilas de Minuit, bringing forth the burgeoning floralcy of rose, ylang, and jasmine mixed with the powdery dry champaca. Through it all the oakmoss shines as bright as moonbeams in a wooded glen. The drydown introduces styrax, musk and civet darkening the scent towards something more feral and lusty. If you’re not a civet fan, fear not as this civet is a mere wisp, a passing thought to add depth and emotion; the moon is now waning towards its final light before the darkness of the new moon and the cycle starts once again.

Under the gentle and silver lumination of the moon at midnight is when magic happens, so it should come as no surprise that in Dawn Hurwitz’s eminently capable hands, DSH Perfumes Lilas de Minuit is nothing short of bottled magic, a scented wonder of wonders. A scent made for howling and dancing, or just sitting quietly staring at the moon through a cold winter window.

Notes: bergamot, pepper, cassis bud, lilac, champaca, grandiflora jasmine, Bulgarian rose absolute, orris, ylang ylang, clove bud, cinnamon, incense, labdanum, styrax, patchouli, oakmoss, civet, musk

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Dawn for supplying my sample. The opinions are my own.

I love Lilac, I love Dawn’s work, I love Chypre, and I love Robert’s reviews. Dying to try this. The full moon always keeps me awake. USA

  • Oh wow, and darn – i so wanted to enter this but i see it is USA only and i am in the UK. This review has it all, DSH, lilac, full moon and gorgeous photos. The scent sounds perfect. I shall be howling at the full moon because i cant enter this draw! Rarrrr :0(

  • This one sounds really interesting from the notes. The last one i’ve tried from DSH perfumes, vanille botanique was an awesome juice. Thanks for the draw, i live in the EU.

  • Slight addendum to above – Oh wow…. i have just found out the draw is worldwide. Fantastic news thank you. I would love the chance to experience this scent from DSH – everything i have tried from this lady so far has not disappointed. I am a moon baby from the UK. thanks for the chance.

  • Lilac, Champaca, ylang… so many amazing notes. I love Dawn’s work. I am definitely a moon person. My favorite thing as a kid was laying on the ground and staring up at the night sky (I grew up on a small town in Iowa where we had lots of sky!!) I am in the US.

  • I love DSH and lunar scents! I’ve always been very drawn to the moon, I think part of that is because I am very fair skinned and have never gotten to enjoy the sun with a free spirit. I’m US based.

I loved the imagery of a moonlite forest in the review!

  • lilac is the most ethereal scent to me. my absolute favorite. anyone who knows me, knows that i adore the moon, in all phases. i am hypnotized by it and could spend hours staring at it. Robert’s review was as enchanting as the moon itself, in that the flow of notes he mentions reminds me of clouds swiftly passing by a full spring moon. I’m thinking that this lovely scent would be perfect to wear on a full moon evening. thank you for the opportunity to possibly do just that.

Classic chypre with lilac? I can die happy. I love Robert turning this review into atavistic moon worship, being a moon lover myself. I need this in my life.

    I’m in Pennsylvania (US).

  • Roberts reviews are wonderful, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is amazing, I love lilac, oakmoss, chypres. I am a moon person all the way, and I live in the United States. =)

  • Wooow DSH perfumes are not easy to get here in Aus i don’t think. Been wanting to try them sooo long.

Lilac is one of my absolute favourite notes in perfume so I’d be keen to see if this holds a candle to my beloved En Passant – even though they sound like very different perfumes.
As someone who generally reaches for warm perfumes, I would like to try something cooler, paler, darker than what I usually go for.

I am in Melbourne Australia 🙂

  • Very nice review. The notes are sounds wonderfully. I would like to try this fragrance. Thanks for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

I love how Robert has described this fragrance and lilac and champaca are two of my favorite florals. I am a moon person. I reside in the United States.

  • I am always looking for a interesting take on lilac and this one sounds – thanks to Robert – as a must-try. Even if I wasn’t drawn to the moon, I’d probably change my preference for the opportunity to try this one. Thank you for the generous giveaway. I am in Germany.

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

Don’t need an introduction to Dawn’s work, know it quite well, since I own a few of her line, and need to get more!!
Any fragrance Dawn creates is big news and this sounds lovely!!
Since I own and wear En Passant by Olivia Giacobetti, if I won, this would be in my rotation!!
    I am in CT, USA.

  • Lilas de Minuit’s depiction is very nice. The perfume does not seem to be on the sweet side which is a plus for me. I love chypres, so this new creation of Dawn Hurwitz looks so good in Robert’s writing. Orris, Ylang-Ylang, Labdanum, Patchouli, Oakmoss, Civet, Musk: many lovely notes that must be composing something seriously good.
I like both the moon and the sun. I live in the E.U. Thank you.

  • I am sure I’ll like this Lilas de Minuit. It was enough to fall in love for me reading first 3-4 sentences…”dark-as-night chypre” and like Coty’s Chypre!!!! This perfume has reach and complex pyramida.

  • Lilas de Minuit sound like a beautiful perfume. I Love thinking about the moon and it’s powers. Lovely article, got me thinking. Thank you. I live in the US.

  • Lilac always reminds me of my mother- she loves them. I’m starting to really appreciate soft, cool and slightly melancholic florals, and this sounds like that sort of blend. Plus I’d honestly love to try just about anything from DSH, so far her scents I’ve tried have all been winners . Please enter me for the bottle. Thanks for the draw! I live in the US

  • Thank you for the amazing drawing! I am drawn by Robert’s description of how the perfume changes as so does the moon. It’s am amazing tie to debut the fragrance on the 28th with a rare moon rise! Magic! I will be watching for it, as I am always drawn to the Moon. In USA. Thank you!

  • I love Lilac and Chypre, I love Dawn Spencer’s work, and in Robert’s review I very much like the part: ¨The drydown introduces styrax, musk and civet darkening the scent towards something more feral and lusty..¨
I am a moon person and I live in EU. Thank you for the lovely draw!

  • The imagery and artwork are breathtaking. And the combination of floral, spices and earthy notes sound very alluring.
I am drawn to the moon.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Dawn is such an artist. Everything she does is worth trying. If I were to list my top 10 scents I can’t live without, at least 3 of them would be hers. I am espcially excited to try a chypre, which she has a definite gift for creating. Thanks fo rthe review. USA

  • Beautiful review, Robert’s review of Lilas de Minuit was very interesting. DSH fragrances are always so lovely. I love both the sun and the moon. I love a clear night when the moon is bright- it is a beautiful sight. It’s so cold where I live though that I’d almost sell my soul for some sunshine! I long for summer…
I”m in the US, thank you so very much for the draw.

  • Those of us that are drawn to the moon feel Robert’s review completely. Dancing, meditating, quietly staring…..been there, done that. Funny, long ago, I remember the howling. My favorite nights are during the spring, I have lilacs in my garden. Good luck to all! I’m in the USA.

  • I was particularly interested in Robert’s discussion of the juxtaposition of dark and light elements. We had a wonderful moon recently, a blood supermoon that was particularly dramatic in coastal California, where I live. But I like both the moon and the sun. We have a lot of cloud cover here, so sunshine can be quite an event.

  • As someone who is often heard asking…’did you see the moon last nigh/this morning, I’m a moon person. Roberts description of Lilas de Minuits drydown I especially enjoyed!
    With gratitude

  • Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments. I love the DSH fan club! She really is a national treasure! xoxo

  • A scent inspired by Coty’s Chypre is interesting per se, but the unusual combo of lilac, oakmoss, incense and styrax is what makes me want to try this perfume.

I’ve been fascinated with moon all my life. Can’t wait for the warmer nights when I’ll be able to take countless pictures of it again!
Thank you for the draw. I live in Russia

  • I used to do moon viewing every September when I lived in Japan. It was so sensual, so I understand the use of styrax and civet. I love songs about the moon, especially that old standard “Moonlight in Vermont.” Let’s not forget about “What a Little Moonlight Can Do.” And I am trying to remember the name of a short story by Anais Nin, where the main character (I think her name was Sabine) took moon baths. Oh, yes, I am a moon lover. I haven’t been so excited for a perfume in a long time.

  • Literally this sounds like something out of this world and from a different planet. Dawn’s perfumes are great and the quality is unmatched. Thanks again for the draw from Hawaii

  • Oakmoss and champaca sound lovely, and something to wear as I accompany my 11-year old on his moonlight walks before bedtime, and would love to try one of DSH’s perfumes…in the US.

  • “Perfumes Lilas de Minuit is a fragrance that through its development seems to follow the various aspects of the moon itself.” What a beguiling statement. I love lilacs and this seems a very different take on it. I would love to win this. I am probably more drawn to the night sky and the moon. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Lovely review by Robert! DSH Minuit is one of my favorite fragrances of all time, so Lilas de Minuit is very appealing to me. I agree entirely with Robert’s initial sentence; Dawn can do no wrong and a fragrance inspired by the moon has to be magical.

    I am in the U.S.

  • Lilac is my favorite scent in the world! I would love to try this perfume, especially because I haven’t smelled anything from this house. I’m from EU – Romania

  • I’ve always had lilac in my back garden and have been fascinated by it’s smell. I’m sure Lilas de Minuit is nothing short of perfection like all DSH perfumes and it’s more than a lilac perfume judging from Robert’s review.
Robert says it’s scent for howling and dancing or just staring at the moon and that seems to create a special sensation.
I have always been drawn by the magic of the moon.

Thank you for the review and the draw.
    I live in the EU.

  • This line caught my imagination: “As the moon unfolds, so does Lilas de Minuit, bringing forth the burgeoning floralcy of rose, ylang, and jasmine mixed with the powdery dry champaca” I’ve always been drawn to the moon – and so is my now 18 month old daughter! 🙂

  • I like that the opening is “new and fresh as the new moon; speaking to new beginnings, plans yet to be made, and pregnant possibility.” I’m always open to something new and exciting.
I’m a moon person myself. I always had a telescope in my bedroom and almost every night would study the sky and the lunar craters.
    Thank you for the draw.
    I’m from the EU.
