Leon Gorman was the man who gave my wife her engagement ring.

On Valentine’s Day 2004, Mary and I met Leon and Lisa (his beloved wife) for dinner in Camden.

Before dinner, Leon brought the four of us together and said, “Every Valentine’s Day I like to buy rings for the women in my life.”

He then handed one ring box to Lisa and another to Mary. Lisa’s ring was something he had given her many years prior. Mary’s was the engagement ring she had said she always wanted.

(Needless to say, Lisa and I had given the ring to Leon earlier in the evening and asked him to be our straight man in this little gag. Despite his reserved Yankee manner, he heartily agreed and played his role perfectly.)

Thankfully, Mary figured out what was happening as soon as she opened the box and agreed to marry me on the spot.

Leon was a beautiful soul, with a great sense of humor, who started my marriage on a great foot. We already miss him.
