2018 Migrant Clinic Season Begins
Magnolia Coastlands AHEC just kicked off the 2018 Migrant Clinic season with a two-day clinic in Reidsville. We partnered with East Georgia Health Care Center and Reidsville First Baptist Church in order to offer much needed health screening services to our target population. The event also provided dental services to the attendees by inviting members of the Baptist Mobile Health Ministry. The program provided health education; increased access to health resources, and, most of all, brought the community leaders together to make positive changes in the health status of the migrant farm workers.
Twenty-eight health profession students from MCG Augusta University, Mercer University, Georgia Southern University, and Southeastern Technical College attended this two-day event. The student group was comprised of medical, pharmacy, nutrition, and dental hygienist assistant. These participants got the opportunity to experience health care in a real world setting. The clinics not only provided service learning opportunities, they also provided cultural awareness which would help health profession students understand the diverse population they will be serving after they complete their professional education.

So what is HB 301? Currently, GA AHEC is looking to convert the existing Preceptor Tax incentive Program (PTIP), expand eligibility to ARPN and PA preceptors in addition to MD/DO preceptors, remove the limitations on the types of rotations and allow all required rotations to be part of the program. It also includes an incentive plan to encourage more rotations to be supported. HB 301 has passed the House and continues to move along.
