Full disclosure: I work for the library and I love winter. I may not be objective, BUT I love this music series and what it means to Green Bay…and it is a pretty good way to make getting through winter bearable…
You know how I’m *always* encouraging people to #survivewinter and find small ways to make winter less awful in an effort to not to be miserable for five months? Live music is one of the ways you can do that. Not only can you get the kids out of the house and expose them to new kinds of music, but you can see a show. And it doesn’t have to be Disney on Ice.
I miss live music. Seeing local musicians perform is something that’s taken a backseat since I’ve become a mom. Sure you can see live, local musicians at bars across Northeastern Wisconsin any weekend and many weeknights, but can you bring your kiddos? Even if children were welcome in bars, most shows start way after he’s out for the night. And when I can get out for a night, let’s be honest, most of the time I end up falling asleep before 9:00 anyway.
Enter: Brown County Library’s Stacks & Steeples music series.
Stacks & Steeples is an Original Music Series on Sundays from 12:30pm – 3pm until March 11th. Local and regional bands will be performing in a unique space in the heart of Downtown Green Bay.
These are good musicians. At no charge. Playing while I’m awake and alert. And I can bring my son. What more could an exhausted parent ask for?
That’s not enough to get you out of the house? Make it an educational experience and pat yourself on the back.
- Talk with your kids about the type of music being played, the instruments, and the sound and lighting equipment
- Head up to the library after the show to check out books or music
- Encourage them to write their own song lyrics at home
- Though not traditionally considered educational, people watching at shows is always fun
Educational or not, last week’s show had me hooked. I’ll be there again this weekend, reliving the good old days of hanging out with the band…er, I mean, making memories with our son.
