Oscar Obert
(1929-2016)

Oscar Obert punches a return against brother Carl in the final of the 1962 USHA Three-Wall Nationals.

Handball Great and Hall of Famer Oscar Obert passed away this weekend.  Obert, the eldest of his three brothers, won more USHA National Open Championships than any other player, accumulating 20 USHA titles in one-, three- and four-wall spanning over three decades.  All of Oscar's one- and three-wall doubles titles were achieved with his brother Ruby.  He brought real crowd appeal to the court as a tremendous competitor and exciting all-out shooter.  Few players will ever match Oscar's outstanding run in 1962 where he captured the Four-wall Singles, Three-wall Singles and One-Wall Doubles titles.
Funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa Church (2855 St. Theresa Ave., Bronx, NY) at 9:45 a.m.  The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at Kensico Cemetery, Tower Garden lot #99 located at 273 Lakeview Ave. Valhalla, NY at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Ref Corner: You Make the Call...

Last Week's Ref Corner Question:
This week's Ref Corner Question comes from Tony Truman in Ormond Beach, FL:
"In three-wall, one member of “A” team hits the ball deep past the “B” team who are both in the front court, but hits the other “A” team player who is in the back court as it’s going out the back of the court, with no chance of the “B” team getting to the ball.  Is it a point or half/side out for the “A” team?  What’s the call?"

Answer:
It is a point or half/side out for "B" team.  Even though the ball passed both players on the "B" team, it remains in play until it bounces a second time.

Ref Corner Question of the Week:
Steve Schultz of Waterloo, Iowa asks the following question:
"Player A is on defensePlayer B hits the ball which is clearly headed for Player A's face.  Player A places his hand in front of his face to block being hit, but he inadvertently closes his fingers on the ball and catches it.  Referee says, 'Point for Player B because Player A caught the ball, which is a violation.' Player A responds that it was just a protective reaction and it should be played over." What’s the correct call?
