PASTORAL THEOLOGY: The Man of God, Volumes One, Two & Three
ALBERT N. MARTIN

From 1978 to 1998, Pastor A.N. Martin taught Pastoral Theology in the Trinity Ministerial Academy, a church-based ministerial training institution. Every Friday throughout the academic year, all the students would gather for two hours of teaching presented in a four-year cycle. Subsequently various series of the audiotapes were widely circulated.

Many expressed their desire to see these lectures printed. As an intermediate step in responding to that desire, the Trinity Baptist Church eldership decided to encourage Pastor Martin to rework the original lectures and deliver them one ?nal time, while professionally recording them. This project was begun in 2007 and completed in 2012 with Pastor Martin teaching his entire Pastoral Theology course “one more time” to 25 to 30 men. The transcriptions of these DVD lectures constituted the basis for the ?rst draft of these edited lectures. Within these lectures there are very few issues faced by the ordinary pastor that are not addressed in one way or another. It is the author’s prayer that when all the volumes are nestled on the bookshelf of any pastor, that whatever his concern may be in conjunction with his pastoral labors, that he can expect that most likely, there is something in these volumes that would be of help to him. It is also the author’s prayer that even the most experienced pastor will ?nd in these pages much that will provoke him to pursue greater personal godliness, increased preaching effectiveness, and expanded pastoral usefulness.

“The first thing I did on my first day of ministry over twenty years ago was to start listening to Pastor Martin’s pastoral theology lectures on cassette tape (yes, that long ago). These addresses not only set my ministry on a biblical course but actually saved my ministry (and my sanity) more times than I can count. I’ve waited a long time to see this material in print and am so glad that present and future generations of pastors can benefit from it as I did (and still do).” —Dr. David Murray, Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“Dr. Al Martin poured a lifetime of study into lectures on the pastor and preaching. He delivered them annually to his Academy of theological students who met at the meeting place of his congregation in Montville, New Jersey. While he taught them he was engaged week by week in the dynamics of a growing and demanding pulpit and pastoral ministry… There is certainly a cry from a million hearts that today’s preaching should know more of the breath of heaven….May these volumes do much good all over the globe to assist the renewal of awakening ministries.” —Dr. Geoff Thomas, Pastor (retired), Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, Wales. Visiting Professor of Historical Theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“When I was a young minister, I came across a series of audio recordings by Al Martin that proved to be a gold mine of wisdom. Opening the Holy Scriptures and leaning on the solid teaching of classic writers, these Pastoral Theology lectures both clarified God’s calling and motivated God’s servants to preach God’s Word and shepherd His flock in accord with the whole counsel of God… About a decade later, when called upon to teach several courses in pastoral theology in the newly begun Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, I listened to most of these lectures again and found them even more profitable the second time through. It is, therefore, a great joy for me that Pastor Martin has reworked this material in his senior years and that now these highly esteemed lectures are finally appearing in book form.” —From the Foreword by Dr. Joel R. Beeke, Pastor, Heritage Reformed Congregation, Grand Rapids, Michigan. President & Professor of Systematic Theology & Homiletics, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

1689 BAPTIST CONFESSION OF FAITH: A Modern Exposition, 5th Edition Revised and Corrected
Sam Waldron, Author of HOW THEN SHOULD WE WORSHIP? The Regulative Principle and Required Parts of the Church's Corporate Worship

BACK IN STOCK ONCE AGAIN IN JANUARY 2023.

A Modern Exposition of the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith by Sam Waldron This 5th Edition is the definitive version, and is presented in hardback.

Modern Christianity is awash in a flood of doctrinal relativity. Satan and his forces love the imprecision and ambiguity which are rampant in our day. As C. H. Spurgeon observed, 'The archenemy of truth has invited us to level our walls and take away our fenced cities.'

This exposition was originally published in 1989 to mark the 300th anniversary of the publication of the Second London Confession, which also became known as the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. Today, Reformed Baptists world-wide hold this Confession in high esteem and many churches continue to regard it as their official statement of faith.

In this extensive exposition, the author Sam Waldron shows that the 1689 Confession is a masterly statement of the historic Christian faith. He writes in a direct and lucid style that will help ministers, students and laymen alike to a clear understanding of this Confession and to its relevance and application to our modern age.

BONUS SECTION # 1- Included in this publication is a very helpful introduction on 'The Legitimacy and Use of Confessions' by the late Dr. Robert Paul Martin, who is now in glory but was formerly Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church in Seattle, Washington.

BONUS SECTION # 2- At the back of the book there are 25 pages of helpful Study Questions (more than 300 in all) that will help to review all the contents of this invaluable book, and serve useful for teaching within the church and the family.

'This is one of my favorite confessional commentaries. It does vary (sometimes more, sometimes less) from studies on the Westminster Confession because of its baptistic approach, but Waldron is an excellent writer, and he has the advantage of being our contemporary. His examples and discussions of issues on which the WCF and LBCF are the same (Creation, Justification, Election, Sabbath, etc.) are excellent. This book is very well organized and clear.' Fred Greco, Senior Pastor, Christ Church PCA, Katy, Texas

Dr. Sam Waldron is the Dean of Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary and Professor of Systematic Theology (cbtseminary.org). Dr. Waldron received a B.A. from Cornerstone University, completed studies equivalent to an M. Div. at Trinity Ministerial Academy, obtained a Th.M. from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, and attained a Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1977 to 2001 he was one of the pastors of the Reformed Baptist Church of Grand Rapids, MI. He is now one of the pastors of Grace Reformed Baptist Church in Owensboro, KY.

THE GOD WHO JUSTIFIES: A Doctrinal Feast of the Pivotal Doctrine of Justifcation by Faith Alone
James White

The First Comprehensive Treatment of Justification in 150 Years!

The history of the Christian church pivots on the doctrine of justification by faith. Once the core of the Reformation, the church today often ignores or misunderstands this foundational doctrine. Theologian James White calls believers to a fresh appreciation of understanding of, and dedication to the great doctrine of justification and then provides an exegesis of the key Scriptural text on this theme.

In today's culture where tolerance is the new absolute, James White proclaims with passion the truth and centrality of the doctrine of justification by faith.

Finally -a contemporary, exegetical, doctrinal, and able defense of the historic Protestant doctrine of justification by God's free grace by faith in Jesus Christ alone. This is the best book on justification since James Buchanan's mid-nineteenth-century classic. We need to teach this material to our congregations. - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

I lost sleep over this book! I simply couldn't put it down. James White writes the way an exegetically and theologically oriented pastor appreciates. This is no book for casual reading; there is solid meat throughout. An outstanding contribution in every sense of the words! - Jay E. Adams

Elegant gift edition in cabra bonded leather with gold stamping and gilt-edged pages. This edition opens with a presentation page and includes a satin ribbon page marker. Type is set in classic 12/14 point Adobe Caslon, on fine quality paper. May be imprinted.

'When used slowly, for meditation and prayer, these pages have often been used by God's Spirit to kindle my dry heart.' --MARK DEVER

'The prayers in The Valley of Vision are steeped in Scripture, yet never succumb to mere formula. They are theologically fresh and vibrant, yet they are rooted in confessionalism. They range over a huge sweep of Christian experience and devotion, but they are never merely esoteric or cute. They brim with deep emotion and transparent passion, but they carefully avoid mere sentimentalism. This is a book that teaches readers to pray by example.' --D.A. CARSON

'The Valley of Vision is a wonderful collection of Puritan prayers which both help to shape and inform our own private devotions and, perhaps more importantly, aid pastors as they seek to lead their congregations in prayer and into the presence of God.' -CARL TRUEMAN

'I cannot commend enough The Valley of Vision, which is a compilation of over two-hundred pages of Puritan prayers (each of which are one page in length). I pray through one of these prayers every day. Sometimes the prayers are so meaningful and relevant that I will pray through the same prayer for days. This is a wonderful aid to supplement one s own prayers. Indeed, these prayers will also teach one how to pray, and, at the same time, they teach theological truth. I cannot think of any Christian who would not benefit from these prayers.' -GREG BEALE

'It's amazing how frequently the prayers from the little book The Valley of Vision show up in our worship services. The Valley of Vision is a collection of Puritan prayers, and I would put them in that category. That is, they are thoughtful, reflective, and meditative. They're even written in a certain kind of cadence, if you've ever noticed, which is probably very intentional, so that they might be used in corporate settings. But they came out of a deep heart of communion with God.' --JOHN PIPER

SAMPLE

The Valley of Vision

LORD, HIGH AND HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,

Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,

where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;

hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.

Let me learn by paradox

that the way down is the way up,

that to be low is to be high,

that the broken heart is the healed heart,

that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,

that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,

that to have nothing is to possess all,

that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,

that to give is to receive,

that the valley is the place of vision.

Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,

and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;

Let me find thy light in my darkness,

thy life in my death,

thy joy in my sorrow,

thy grace in my sin,

thy riches in my poverty,

thy glory in my valley.

PREFACE

"The prayers in this book are drawn from the largely forgotten deposit of Puritan spiritual exercises, meditations and aspirations. They testify to the richness and color of evangelical thought and language that animated vital piety in an important stream of English religious life. It is hoped that their publication will help to redress the neglect of this vast ocean of Puritan spirituality. The Puritan Movement was a religious phenomenon of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, yet its influence continued at least to the time of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–92) who may be regarded as the last of the great Puritans. Although the political storm ended in 1660, its theological ground-swell carried forward distinct forms of practical religion for many decades, particularly family worship and private devotion. In these spheres, and in that of the authority of Scripture over the whole of life, New England Presbyterians and Congregationalists were at one with English Dissenters and Anglican evangelicals in a close-knit union that transcended differences of worship, discipline and polity. They spoke the same spiritual language, shared the same code of values, adopted the same attitude towards the Christian religion, and breathed out the same God-centered aspirations in a manner that makes it impossible to distinguish the voice of conformist from that of nonconformist. Thus, this book of Puritan prayers has a unity not often found in similar works. The strength of Puritan character and life lay in the practice of prayer and meditation. Many of those who held the doctrines of grace wrote down a record of God’s intimate dealings with their souls, not with an eye to publication, but, as in David Brainerd’s case, to test their spiritual growth, and to encourage themselves by their re-perusal in times of low spiritual fervor. Others, like William Jay and Henry Law, turned their personal devotions into corporate forms for family worship, and published them to the church at large. Yet others, such as Philip Doddridge and William Romaine, wrote prayers into their literary works in order to evoke the reader’s spiritual response. Many ministers went further and advised their congregations to put their private prayer thoughts on paper and vocalize them. There thus emerged an important corpus of inspiring Puritan prayers that are still largely unused.

In extracting this selection from Puritan literature it has been necessary to change some prayers from the plural and the third person into the singular and the first person in order that the book might be used chiefly in private devotion. But, by a change of pronoun, most of them can be employed in corporate worship. A final section has been added for occasions of corporate worship. Old idiom has been retained, but it has been necessary to reframe some phrases in order to accommodate archaic thought to modern understanding. A number of prayers were originally spiritual experiences, as in the case of Thomas Shepard, and some others are conflations from different sources to bind together a given theme. A poetic form has been adopted throughout as an aid to easier comprehension and utterance. Each prayer consists of a number of main clauses with subsidiary clauses that illuminate and enlarge the subject. In this way an opportunity is provided for pauses and reflections. The editor is thus responsible for the structure of the prayers as here printed. The book is not intended to be read as a prayer manual. The soul learns to pray by praying; for prayer is communion with a transcendent and immanent God who on the ground of his nature and attributes calls forth all the powers of the redeemed soul in acts of total adoration and dedication. The prayers should therefore be used as aspiration units, the several parts of which could become springboards for the individual’s own prayer subjects. These and their divisions can also serve homiletic purposes. The prayers are taken from the works of Thomas Shepard, Thomas Watson, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Isaac Watts, William Williams, Philip Doddridge, William Romaine, David Brainerd, Augustus Toplady, Christmas Evans, William Jay, Henry Law and Charles Haddon Spurgeon. They are sent out with the prayer of Philip Doddridge, that, ‘However weak and contemptible this work may seem in the eyes of the children of this world, and however imperfect it really be, it may nevertheless live before thee, and through a divine power be mighty to produce the rise and progress of religion.’ I desire to thank the Rev. Iain H. Murray of the Banner of Truth Trust for his encouragement to produce this work, Mr. S. M. Houghton, many of whose kindly criticisms have been accepted, and the Rev. R. E. Davies, who helped to resolve theological points. I am grateful to the Trustees of the British Museum, Dr. Williams’ Library, and the Evangelical Library for access to out-of-print books. A SCRIPTURAL EXPOSITION OF THE BAPTIST CATECHISM
Benjamin Beddome with Introduction by Dr. James Renihan and Biographical Sketch by Dr. Michael Haykin

ORDER WITH OUR PAPERBACK CONFESSION & CATECHISM AND SAVE EVEN MORE!

"The recent reprint of The Baptist Catechism has given families and study classes a helpful tool for memorizing the great doctrines of the Christian faith. Now, a hidden jewel, Benjamin Beddome's 'A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism,' takes its place alongside the Catechism to give much needed assistance to the same families and classes. Beddome shows how the doctrines contained in the Catechism are founded upon Scripture, and explains them for all to understand. This is indeed a wonderful instrument to make skilled craftsmen from apprentices!" - Dr. James M. Renihan

"During the early years of his ministry Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) used Benjamin Keach's 'The Baptist Catechism' extensively, but clearly felt that the questions and answers of this catechism needed to be supplemented by further material. So he composed what was printed in 1752 as 'A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism by Way of Question and Answer,' which basically reproduced the wording and substance of the catechism drawn up by Keach, but added various sub-questions and answers to each of the main questions.

The Scriptural Exposition proved to be quite popular. There were two editions during Beddome's lifetime, the second of which was widely used at the Bristol Baptist Academy, which was the sole British Baptist seminary for much of the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century it was reprinted once in the British Isles and twice in the United States, the last printing being in 1849." - Dr. Michael Haykin

Benjamin Beddome was born January 23, 1717, at Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire, England. He was the son of Baptist minister John Beddome. He was apprenticed to a surgeon in Bristol, but moved to London in 1839 and joined the Baptist church in Prescott Street. At the call of his church, he devoted himself to the work of Christian ministry, and in 1740 began to preach at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire. For many years he was one of the most respected Baptist ministers in western England. He was also a man of some literary culture. In 1752, he wrote "Exposition of the Baptist Catechism." In 1770, Beddome received a MA degree from Providence College, Rhode Island.

It was Beddome's practice to write a hymn weekly for use after his Sunday morning sermon. Though not originally intended for publication, he allowed 13 of these to appear in the Bristol Baptist Collection of Ash & Evans (1769), and 36 in Rippon's Selections (1787). In 1817, a posthumous collection of his hymns was published, containing 830 pieces. Robert Hall wrote of Beddome's hymns:

"The man of taste will be gratified with the beauty and original turns of thought which many of them exhibit, while the experimental Christian will often perceive the most secret movements of his soul strikingly delineated, and sentiments portrayed which will find their echo in every heart."

He died September 23, 1795, at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, England.

"Beddome's exposition is particularlly helpful for doctrine classes in churches and can give substantial help to any leader that would want to convene such a study." - Dr. Tom Nettles

"An amazingly insightful volume, written in highly accessible and readable style. Beddome gives helpful, clear biblical exposition to the Baptist Catechism by a series of succinct questions and answers exploring each catechism question's affirmations, denials, and implications concisely and with biblical grounding. He wrote for people in his congregation, not scholars, and its intended audience is obvious in his clear, simple handling of the various headings in the Catechism. Behold here the timelessness of the Puritan approach to Scripture!

Solid Ground did a great job putting together the physical volume. The printing is crisp, dark, and clear; the font is sized to be quite legible; and the paperback itself feels well-made and sturdy.

Beddome's 'A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism' is indeed an important piece of Baptist history; but more than that, it’s an altogether unique book which will help you understand Scripture and know God better. Warmly recommended." - customer R.T. Marsh

THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: The 1891 Edition with 170 Illustrations
JOHN BUNYAN

This beautiful edition of Bunyan's classic THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS contains dozens and dozens of engravings that enhance the value of the masterpiece. This volume has been produced with the utmost care to recreate the original edition as it was. This is a project of a local church in Birmingham, Alabama and is truly a labor of love.

"I have been collecting editions of 'The Pilgrim's Progress' for 25 years and this is undoubtedly my favorite. It is a faithful reprint of an 1891 edition. The cover is a work of art. The 170 illustrations inside are beautifully done and very helpful to visualize what Bunyan has in print. This oversize book is great to gather the family around and read together. The education of a child is not complete until they have read this complete edition of Bunyan's immortal work." - Pastor Mark Liddle, Dominion Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL

JOHN BUNYAN [1628-1888] was C. H. Spurgeon's favorite author and his legendary work, THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, is the most popular book ever written apart from Holy Scripture. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times!many times with his wife reading it to him in afternoon relaxation and meditation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress, that sweetest of all prose poems, without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, this man is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere, his blood is Bibline, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is FULL of the Word of God."

THE POTTER'S FREEDOM: A Defense of the Reformation and a Rebuttal of Norman Geisler's 'Chosen But Free'
James White

"James White combines sound biblical exegesis, theological erudition, and a deep passion for truth in his able rebuttal to Norman Geisler's Chosen but Free. I am grateful that The Potter's Freedom powerfully exposes Geisler's inconsistencies and shows that his self-labeled "moderate Calvinism" is no Calvinism at all. The Potter's Freedom has far-reaching consequences for any serious student of Reformed theology, for Geisler is not a lone ranger in promoting historic Reformed theology as "extreme Calvinism" and Semi-pelagianism as "moderate Calvinism." I pray that God may use this book abundantly to remove many caricatures about the Reformed faith and to move many to embrace unabashedly solid, Reformed convictions." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke

"Many of us, who have otherwise profited from the writings of Dr. Norman Geisler, have been grieved by his hapless attempt to harmonize Calvinism and Arminianism. With the skill of a surgeon, Dr. James R. White dissects Geisler's arguments and reveals them to be based on convoluted thinking, inconsistencies, and misinterpretations of Scripture. I pray that this book shall have a wide audience, not just as a definitive rebuttal to Geisler, but also as a helpful exposition of the Calvinisim/Arminianism debate." -Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

IN MY PLACE CONDEMNED HE STOOD: Celebrating the Glory of the Atonement
J.I. PACKER & MARK DEVER

An important anthology that reaffirms the classic doctrine of substitutionary atonement and counters the ongoing attacks against it.

If ever there was a time and a need for an enthusiastic reaffirmation of the biblical doctrine of substitutionary atonement, it is now. With this foundational tenet under widespread attack, J. I. Packer and Mark Dever's anthology plays an important role, issuing a clarion call to readers to stand firm in the truth.

In My Place Condemned He Stood combines three classic articles by Packer-"The Heart of the Gospel"; his Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture, "What Did the Cross Achieve"; and his introductory essay to John Owen's The Death of Death in the Death of Christ-with Dever's recent article, "Nothing but the Blood." It also features a foreword by the four principals of Together for the Gospel: Dever, Ligon Duncan, C. J. Mahaney, and Al Mohler. Thoughtful readers looking for a compact classic on this increasingly controversial doctrine need look no farther than this penetrating volume.

"Here is vintage J. I. Packer accompanied by some younger friends. The magisterial but too-little-known essay 'What Did the Cross Achieve?' is itself worth the price of the whole book. And there is much more besides. Here, then, are gospel riches, and In My Place Condemned He Stood marks the spot where the buried treasure lies. Start digging!" - Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor's Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

"This book contains some of the finest essays that have ever been written on the death of Christ." -David F. Wells, Distinguished Senior Research Professor, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary; author, The Courage to Be Protestant: Truth-Lovers, Marketers and Emergents in the Postmodern World

"Writing with the precision of learned theologians and the passion of forgiven sinners, J. I. Packer and Mark Dever explain the meaning of atonement, substitution, and propitiation-not just as words, but as saving benefits we can only receive from a crucified Savior." -Philip Graham Ryken, President, Wheaton College

"This work attempts to trace the footsteps of a great circumnavigator in the divine life, somewhat as an open boat might follow in the wake of the ships of Columbus into a new world. And yet it is not new, but as old as the grace of God in the heart of sinful man; and now, so many have crossed the sea, and prepared charts and maps of their passage for the use of others, that there is scarcely a league over which some compass has not been drawn, or into which some fathoming line has not been let down; though there is scenery still hidden, and there are depths never yet sounded, nor ever will be, inasmuch as the grace of God in the heart of man is unfathomable; and in sailing over this ocean we can often do no more than cry out with the apostle Paul, 'O the depths!' There is always much that is peculiar with every individual mind in crossing this sea; and likewise in following the traces of so experienced and wise a navigator as Bunyan every individual will find something new to remark upon; so that these lectures, though on an old subject, will not necessarily be found commonplace, or monotonous, or superfluous.

This excellent commentary on Pilgrim's Progress consists on 10 Lectures.

The first nine lectures cover Pilgrim's Progress: Part One, and the final lecture covers the journey of Christiana to the Celestial City.

These are spiritually enriching lectures that will not only help you appreciate Pilgrim's Progress, but also the Bible itself.

(1) *DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: Practical Wisdom from Richard Baxter

J.I. Packer and Notes by Michael Lundy

Practical wisdom for dealing with depression.

Depression—whether circumstantial and fleeting or persistent and long term—impacts most people at some point in their lives. Puritan pastor Richard Baxter spent most of his ministry caring for depressed and discouraged souls, and his timeless counsel still speaks to us today. In this book, psychiatrist Michael S. Lundy and theologian J. I. Packer present Baxter’s writings in order to comfort, instruct, and strengthen all who struggle with depression.

(2) A MERCIFUL AND FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST: Studies in the Book of Hebrews by Martyn Lloyd-Jones

The book of Hebrews was written to magnify the supremacy of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and our Great High Priest. It exhorts and encourages the church to hold fast to its faith, persevering through persecution and trials because of the great salvation found in Christ. This collection pulls together sermons from Martyn Lloyd-Jones on the book of Hebrews, helping readers understand how it applies to their daily lives. Lloyd-Jones walks readers through Hebrews 2 and other important passages in this book, pointing Christians to their need of salvation and their identity as the people of God.

**THE STORY OF HIS GLORY: The Most Important Story Ever Told by Brian Hedges

This is the story of God’s gracious rescue of the world through the gift of his Son and the sending of his Spirit. It’s a story of creation and judgment, crime and punishment, grace and glory. It’s a story filled with drama, tension, power, beauty, and hope. And at the heart of this story is the revelation of God’s glory in the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ.

This is the most important story in all of history. And in it you will find the reason you were created, the way you are meant to live, and the path to eternal life.

**REMAINING FAITHFUL IN MINISTRY: 9 Essential Convictions for Every Pastor by John MacArthur

Perhaps no one else has ever faced as much hardship, opposition, or relentless suffering as the apostle Paul. And yet, through it all, Paul stood firm in Christ and remained faithful—to the very end.

The power of Paul’s example has captivated veteran pastor John MacArthur for years, and here he outlines nine unwavering convictions that contributed to this remarkable perseverance. In an age when pastoral failure and burnout are increasingly common, this book is a call to endurance in ministry, encouraging pastors to stand strong in their role and not lose heart, regardless of what God sends their way.

WHAT GRIEVING PEOPLE WISH YOU KNEW: About What Really Helps (and what really hurts) by Nancy Guthrie

We want to say or do something that helps our grieving friend. But what?

When someone we know is grieving, we want to help. But sometimes we stay away or stay silent, afraid that we will do or say the wrong thing, that we will hurt instead of help.

In this straightforward and practical book, Nancy Guthrie provides us with the insight we need to confidently interact with grieving people. Drawing upon the input of hundreds of grieving people, as well as her own experience of grief, Nancy offers specifics on what to say and what not to say, and what to do and what to avoid. Tackling touchy topics like talking about heaven, navigating interactions on social media, and more, this book will equip readers to support those who are grieving with wisdom and love.

THE FINAL DAYS OF JESUS: The Most Important Week of the Most Important Person Who Ever Lived by Kostenberger & Taylor

Walk With Jesus During His Last Week on Earth

On March 29, AD 33, Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem and boldly predicted that he would soon be put to death?executed on a cross, like a common criminal. So began the most important week of the most important person who ever lived.

Nearly 2,000 years later, the events that took place during Jesus’s last days still reverberate through the ages. Designed as a day-by-day guide to Passion Week, The Final Days of Jesus leads us to reexamine and meditate on the history-making, earth-shaking significance of Jesus’s arrest, trial, crucifixion, and empty tomb.

Combining a chronological arrangement of the Gospel accounts with insightful commentary, charts, and maps, this book will help you better understand what actually happened all those years ago? and why it matters today.

OVERCOMING SIN AND TEMPTATION by John Owen

John Owen’s writings, though challenging, are full of rich spiritual insights. In this unabridged volume, editors Justin Taylor and Kelly Kapic have edited three of Owen's classic works? Of the Mortification of Sin in Believers, Of Temptation: The Nature and Power of It, and The Nature, Power, Deceit, and Prevalency of Indwelling Sin. They have updated the author’s language, translated the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, and footnoted difficult or unknown phrases, all without sacrificing any of Owen’s original message. These three treatises on temptation, sin, and repentance are theologically robust and insightful while also being accessible to modern readers. Overcoming Sin and Temptation will help a new generation benefit from the writings of this remarkable Puritan. Now redesigned with a new cover.

DEFENDING YOUR FAITH: An Introduction to Apologetics by R.C. Sproul

There is a widespread belief that reason and faith are incompatible and opposed to each other. Faith is viewed as subjective, emotional, a crutch for those who find the real world too hard. Though many of the world’s finest minds hold this view, the Bible teaches that it is the fool who says there is no God.

Dr. R. C. Sproul clearly and simply argues that at its core Christianity is rational. He focuses on defending the basic truth claims for two of the most crucial issues of apologetics: God’s existence and the Bible’s authority.

In this primer of apologetic thought, Dr. Sproul affirms four logical principles that are necessary for all real discussion and teaches you how to defend your faith in a faithless world. Using the writings of church fathers and philosophers throughout the ages, he uncovers the common ideologies that work against faith.

The defense of the faith is not a luxury or an intellectual vanity. It is a task appointed by God that you should be able to give a reason for the hope that is in you as you bear witness before the world.

(8) 6 WAYS THE OLD TESTAMENT SPEAKS TODAY: An Interactive Guide by Alec Motyer

What does the Old Testament have to do with us today?

To many of us, the Old Testament can seem distant, foreign, and confusing, with difficult language and events disconnected from our present-day lives. But with a little guidance, it is quickly evident that the Old Testament still speaks today.

In this engaging book, late pastor-theologian Alec Motyer leads us to discover the everyday significance of six key themes that resonate throughout the Old Testament: history, religion, worship, prophecy, wisdom, and theology. Each chapter focuses on one theme, featuring a week’s worth of Scripture readings paired with accessible commentary on the biblical text. Clear, accessible, and warmly pastoral, this book will help you see what this collection of ancient texts from the past has to do with our day-to-day lives in the present.

(9) DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND THE CHRISTIAN LIFE: Practical Wisdom from Richard Baxter with Intro. by

(10) THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE: Rediscovering the Evangelical Gospel by James M. Boice & Philip G. Ryken

The late James Boice and his successor at Philadelphia's Tenth Presbyterian Church contend that we live in an age of casual Christianity. Evangelicalism desperately needs a return to the doctrines that once reformed the church. Advocating a practical-minded, kindhearted, and biblically based faith, Boice and Ryken present a compelling exposition of Calvinism's five points.

(11) WEAKNESS IS THE WAY: Life with Christ Our Strength by J.I. Packer

For Christians, weakness should be a way of life. Yet most of us try desperately to be sufficient on our own, and we resent our limitations and our needs.

Renowned theologian and Bible teacher J. I. Packer reflects on his experience of weakness—having been hit by a truck at a young age and now facing the realities of aging—in order to teach us the importance of embracing our own frailty, and also to help us look to Christ for strength, affirmation, and contentment. Find here a path from discouragement to freedom in light of our all-sufficient God.

(12) FINISHING OUR COURSE WITH JOY: Guidance from God for Engaging with our Aging by J.I. Packer

Do you look in the mirror and see gray hair and wrinkles? Packer---now in his mid-80s---says that getting older doesn't mean you should banish yourself to the rocking chair! Sharing personal insights and examples, he offers a compelling vision for lifelong learning, purposeful planning, running the race with endurance, and glorifying Jesus---no matter what your age! 128 pages, softcover.

COVENANT THEOLOGY: A Reformed and Baptistic Perspective on God's Covenants
Greg Nichols

NEW PAPERBACK EDITION NOW AVAILABLE!

More than 30 years in the making, from Greg Nichols' class notes comes a new printing of a volume that has already helped those who are Reformed and Baptistic understand the vital subject of GOD'S COVENANTS from the perspective of those persuaded of Disciple's Baptism. A MUST READ!

This volume is the first of the Scriptural and Systematic Studies Series by Greg Nichols.

"Baptists who embrace their historic Calvinistic and Covenantal roots have long since needed a robust and comprehensive treatment of Covenant Theology that includes the nuanced interpretations of the biblical covenants that a baptistic hermeneutic requires. This treatment by Greg Nichols does just that and more. As a devotee of the Westminster tradition (including its chapter, 'On God's Covenant with Man'), I differ here and there; sometimes significantly so. But there is so much to applaud in this volume and Baptists will do well to read this volume carefully and with much gratitude. A splendid achievement. I, for one, will insist that my Presbyterian students read it." - Derek W. H. Thomas, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, RTS, Minister of Preaching and Teaching, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC, Editorial Director, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals

"There has been an urgent need for Reformed Baptist to produce a work on the covenants. I am so thankful that Greg Nichols has engaged this very weighty work. It is a very timely addition on a vitally important topic and adds much to a growing Reformed Baptist literary body." - James R. White, Alpha and Omega Ministry, author of numerous books, including 'Pulpit Crimes', published by Solid Ground

"Greg Nichols has done a wonderful job of articulating a genuinely reformed and baptistic model of covenant theology. The fruit of decades of study and teaching on his subject, this volume should be read by all who want to understand the proper framework of divine revelation. My counsel to all ministerial students is 'Tolle lege' (take up and read)." - Dr. Robert P. Martin, Emmanuel Reformed Baptist Church, Seattle, WA, Author of "Guide to the Puritans"

"The Old Testament was inspired by the Spirit of God. It is certainly a record of what is true, of creation, fall, and the promise of the Messiah. There is the whole machinery of redemptive anticipation that God set up with his old covenant people. What of family life? What of the children of believers? Their sons are no longer to be circumcised. What is the status of the sons and daughters of believers under the new covenant? Such questions are fascinating and Baptists are asking them and seeking answers. Hence the appearance of this book which comes out of many years of thought and preparation by Greg Nichols and has been eagerly anticipated by the gospel church. May it do much good. May we all look again at the Scriptures and find a new help in understanding them in this satisfying and provocative volume." - Geoff Thomas, Pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales

"I remember the very first class that I took from Pastor Nichols which was on the Doctrine of the Covenants and thinking to myself, 'This material has utterly transformed the way that I look at the Bible.' Until that point, I had never been taught covenant theology and so the effect of this biblical teaching on my life was nothing short of profound! Four thoughts come to mind as I think about this new book: thoroughly scriptural, historically confessional, warmly pastoral and experientially practical. My prayer is that the publication of this work will be that which our great God uses to edify His church and to get much glory to His own holy Name." - Pastor Rob Ventura, Grace Community Baptist Church, North Providence, RI, Co-Author of "Portrait of Paul"

"As a former student of Greg's in the Trinity Ministerial Academy, I cannot say enough good about his lectures in systematic theology. In addition to playing a primary role in shaping my ministry, they have had a significant impact upon me personally. His lectures on Doctrine of the Covenants are among my favorites. I am not aware of anything in print that treats this topic as clearly and comprehensively, and from a distinctly Baptist perspective. Greg's emphasis throughout is biblical, pastoral, and practical, with a contemporary flavor." - Pastor Jim Domm, Englewood Baptist Church, Englewood NJ

"Pastor Greg Nichols' lectures on the Biblical Covenants is a breath of fresh air among a smog of other materials available on the same subject. Presented in a plain and readily understandable way, it has revolutionized my thinking and approach to understanding God's dealing with mankind. Next to a grasp of Biblical Calvinism, nothing has opened up my understanding more to the Word of God than this. It has enabled me to see the true unity that does exist in both the Old and New Testaments while at the same time enabling me to understand the differences. These lectures offer a Biblical alternative to the serious Bible student without feeling they must be either Pedo-Baptist or Dispensational in their approach to the scriptures. With nothing like them in print available, it would be a great asset to the Church of Jesus Christ to have these available in printed form." - Pastor Martin Hoffman, Providence Baptist Church, Lecanto, FL.

"Greg Nichols' approach to theology is rooted in his commitment to the Word of God. He has always desired to allow the bible to speak and to sit under its revelation. Over the years I have had both the joy and the privilege to sit through his teaching on various aspects of Systematic Theology and benefited greatly from it. I can heartily recommend his writings to you, it will take you back to your bible, deepen your understanding of God's Holy Word and draw your closer to the Lord." - Pastor Robert Briggs, Immanuel Baptist Church, Sacramento, CA

"During the early 1980's when I was training for the Christian ministry, it was my privilege to sit under the teaching of Pastor Greg Nichols for a significant portion of my class-work. His instruction exerted a formative influence in opening up the entire Bible to me. His material on the covenants for example, was so insightful in unveiling the framework of redemption. Reformed Baptists would benefit by having Pastor Nichols' material in print. It would help our churches to better understand our faith and better pass it on to the next generation." - Pastor Stu Johnston, Grace Reformed Baptist Church of Mebane, NC

"One of the benefits of being under the theological teachings of Greg Nichols is being able to enthusiastically recommend his lectures. His lessons enrich the soul of the Christian, extract beautiful principals from Biblical texts that fix themselves in the heart and make them unforgettable. Based on my understanding of Christ and His Word, and my Christian experience I recommend availing yourself of the theological teachings of Greg Nichols." - Pastor Oscar Arocha, Pastor, Bautista de la Gracia, Santiago, Dominican Republic

A COMPLETE BODY OF DIVINITY: Sermons Upon the Westminster Shorter Catechism
THOMAS WATSON, with a Preface and Appendix by C.H. Spurgeon

In 1878 Charles H. Spurgeon wrote a Preface to his publication of a new revised edition of Watson's 'Body of Divinity', which he introduced with these words: "Thomas Watson's BODY OF PRACTICAL DIVINITY is one of the most precious and peerless works of the Puritans; and those best acquainted with it prize it most. Watson was one of the most concise, racy, illustrative, and suggestive of those eminent divines who made the Puritan age the Augustan period of evangelical literature. There is a happy union of sound doctrine, heart-searching experience and practical wisdom throughout all his works, and his BODY OF DIVINITY is, beyond all the rest, useful to the student and the minister."

Spurgeon later informs us that the primary purpose of the new edition of this classic work was for the benefit of the students in The Pastor's College. He then tells us that Rev. George Rogers, principal of the Pastor's College, carefully superintended the issue of this edition, and in a note written to Spurgeon said: "I know of no work with so much sermon matter within the same compass. In Howe, and Charnock, and Owen, we must often read much before we are tempted to close the book and think out a whole sermon, but Watson teaches us to make short work of it. The whole may be utilized. On this account it would be, I think, of great value to all our students who have pastorates. It is for their benefit, I suppose, you wished the reprint. All editions extant which we have seen, abound in errors and imperfections. These have been rectified, not entirely we fear, but in a degree as nearly approaching to accuracy as in a revision of another's composition could be expected. No alteration of sentiment has been made, but every shade of the author's meaning has been scrupulously retained."

"This book, first published after Watson's death in 1692, was his magnum opus and became his most famous work. Following the question and answer format of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, it offers 176 sermons on the essential teachings of Christianity. It shows the author's deep understanding of spiritual truths and his ability to make them clear to anyone. Unlike most other systematic theologies, it weds knowledge and piety together, and can be used effectively in daily devotions." - Dr. Joel Beeke

A unique feature of this edition is the inclusion of Spurgeon's APPENDIX ON BAPTISM which is placed at the end of the Watson's work. Spurgeon explained the reason for the Appendix in the closing words of his Preface: "As it would be most uncandid to suppress any part of an author's opinion, the chapter on Infant Baptism remains as it came from his pen; but our conscience could not allow us to issue it without inserting a statement of our own views as an Appendix. We trust this method will commend itself to all; we knew not what fairer and more honest course to pursue."

This is the COMPLETE Body of Divinity by Watson as it covers all the material in the Shorter Catechism. In more recent times Banner of Truth has published his work and entitled his exposition of the first 38 questions of the catechism The Body of Divinity, and then his two other sections have been published under the titles The Ten Commandments and The Lord's Prayer. This one volume contains the complete contents of all three of those volumes and puts them conveniently in one book.

THOMAS WATSON (1620-1686) graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was known for being a hard student. He was a man of considerable learning, a popular but judicious preacher, and eminent in the gift of prayer. He is one of the most popular of all the English Puritans and, certainly one of the most readable. While the volume republished here was his most popular work he also wrote several others that have been reprinted time and time again, such as, Heaven Taken by Storm, The Godly Man's Picture, The Beatitudes, All Things for Good and The Doctrine of Repentance.

THE DISTINCTIVENESS OF BAPTIST COVENANT THEOLOGY: Revised Edition A Comparison Between Seventeenth-Century Particular Baptist and Paedobaptist Federalism
Pascal Denault

NEW REVISED EDITION IS NOW AVAILABLE TO SHIP.

"This book by Pascal Denault is a welcome addition to the literature on an issue that has vexed many for too long. It is clear that the seventeenth-century Particular Baptists' formulation of covenant theology in the Second London Confession of Faith was a modified version of the one contained in the Westminster Confession of Faith. But why the different formulation? Denault's work goes ad fontes (to the sources) to find the answer." - Richard C. Barcellos, Ph. D., Palmdale, CA

"Pascal Denault deserves many thanks for his labor in researching and describing the nuances of English covenant theology in the Seventeenth Century. He has uncovered significant factors contibuting to the differences between Presbyterian and Particular Baptist thought and practice, describing theological categories in easily accessible terms." - James M. Renihan, Ph.D., Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies

"I pray that this work will contribute to the raising up of more reformed covenantal baptist churches which avoid the errors of dispensationalism, theonomy, the Federal Vision, and law/gospel errors. It is worthy to be read by all concerned." - Fred A. Malone, Ph.D., author of 'Baptism of Disciplies Alone'

"Not only do I think that this is an excellent and valuable resource. I believe it is one of the best upon this suibject. This is such an informative and helpful book that I pray that our covenant Lord provodentially places this book into the hands of every student of covenant theology." - Jeffrey D. Johnson, author of 'The Fatal Flaw of the Theology Behind Infant Baptism'

"Denault's careful work on the seventeenth-century documents has yielded a strong, Bible-centered, covenantal defense of believers' baptism and is worthy of a dominant place in the contemporary discussions of both covenantalism and baptism." - Thomas J. Nettles, Ph.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"This new study by Pascal Denault is most helpful in providing an accurate summary of the historic discussion between the Baptists and their fellow Puritans, and then showing the way this discussion bears on the contemporary treatment of a vital issue." - Michael A.G. Haykin, Th.D., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

"Whether one agrees or disagrees with Pascal's arguments and conclusion, nobody can read this book without admitting the seriousness and the soundness of the facts that are reported and that make it a most commendable book on the subject." - Raymond Perron, Ph.D., Quebec City, Qc

COVENANT THEOLOGY: A Baptist Distinctive
Edited by Earl M. Blackburn, Contributions by Walter Chantry, Ken Fryer, Fred Malone, Kenneth Puls and Justin Taylor

"Many works on the issue of covenantal theology can be thick and difficult. This work cuts through the fog, lays out the case, and argues persuasively that Baptists not only have a long history of dedication to biblical covenantalism, but that their commitment is fully consistent with their commitment to the authority of Scripture and particular Baptist distinctives related to the ordinances and ecclesiology. A welcomed and timely addition to the current literature on this important subject in a very readable form." - James White, Director of Alpha & Omega Ministries

"In the 20th Century, a minimalist theological climate developed among Baptists. Fighting for the fundamentals of the faith tended to reduce the importance of detailed confessional statements making only a few core doctrines central to Baptist identity. This modest doctrinal focus was stoutly defended by noble men, but in reducing Christian theology to a few essentials, they opened the door for a new structural system 'Dispensationalism' to overwhelm the older covenantalism of the Baptist churches and Confessions. Only in the later decades of the century has there been an attempt to recover the framework that was lost. This book is a helpful addition to the growing body of literature that demonstrates the centrality of covenantalism to Baptist life and practice. It will be very useful to assist in the recovery of our understanding of the older and more Scriptural system." - James M. Renihan; Dean, Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies

"This volume gathers into one place a helpful collection of thoughts on an important subject by respected Baptist writers. Those who think that covenant theology is synonymous with paedobaptism will find that notion debunked by the chapters in this book. If you are looking for a good introduction to exegetical, theological, historical and pastoral arguments for a thoroughly Baptist understanding of covenant theology, read this book." -Tom Ascol; Director of Founders Ministries & Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Cape Coral, FL

"The 'Old Paths' of Baptist Covenant Theology are clearly set forth in this book edited by Earl Blackburn. This is a book that pastors need to get into the hands of their people as an introduction to this foundational truth. The summary by Pastor Blackburn gives a good foundation, the chapter on the hermeneutics of Covenant Theology presented by Dr. Fred Malone is good and beneficial, and the three chapters by Pastor Walter Chantry on the Covenants of Works and Grace, Imputation and Baptism make for a complete introduction to Baptist Covenant Theology. We are in debt to these men for the giving us this worthwhile volume." - Gordon Taylor; Coordinator for ARBCA, Carlisle, PA

THE SHORTER CATECHISM ILLUSTRATED: From Christian History and Biography
John Whitecross

"This unusual volume follows the doctrinal structure of the classic Puritan catechism, expanding each doctrinal point not with exposition, as is customary, but with many factual stories well selected by the author from a wide range of sources. Thus such subjects as Providence, Prayer and The Ten Commandments are illuminated with telling and sometimes fascinating narratives. First published in 1828, and passing through many editions in the last century, the book has been revised for greater usefulness today.

SAMPLES:

Matthew Henry, a little before his death, said to a friend, "You have been accustomed to take notice of the sayings of dying men: this is mine, That a life spent in the service of God, and in communion with Him, is the most comfortable and pleasant life that any one can live in this world."

A Polish prince was accustomed to carry the picture of his father always in his bosom; and on particular occasions used to take it out and view it, saying, "Let me do nothing unbecoming so excellent a father." A suitable reflection for a Christian!

The punctuality of John Newton, while tide-surveyor at Liverpool, was particularly remarked. One day, however, some business had detained him, and he came to his boat much later than usual, to the surprise of those who had observed his former punctuality. He went out in the boat as heretofore, to inspect a ship, but by some accident the ship blew up just before he reached it; and it appears, that if he had left the shore a few minutes sooner, he must have perished with the rest on board.

It was remarked by one, 'If I have been honored to do any good in my day; if I have been of any use to the church of Christ, to my family, and to my fellow-creatures; if I have enjoyed any happiness in life (and I am happy to say I have had a large share); if I have any hope beyond the grave, and that hope I would not exchange for a thousand worlds-I owe all to the Bible.'

In the Memoirs of Thomas Boston of Ettrick appears the following: Singing at family worship Psalm 121, this view of the Bible was given me, namely, that whatever were the particular occasions of the writing of it or any part thereof, I am to look upon it as written for me as much as if there were not another person in the world, and so is everybody else to whose hand it comes.'

Sometimes there were more kings than one in Sparta, who governed by joint authority. A king was occasionally sent to some neighbouring senate in the character of a Spartan ambassador. Did he, when so sent, cease to be a king of Sparta, because he was also an ambassador? No; he did not divest himself of his regal dignity, but only added to it that of public deputation. So Christ, in becoming man, did not cease to be God; but though He ever was, and still continued to be, King of the whole creation, He acted as the voluntary servant and messenger of the Father.

Among the many whom George Whitefield was honored to be the means of converting to the knowledge and love of the truth, and who will be a crown of joy to him in the day of the Lord, it is perhaps not generally known that the celebrated James Hervey is to be mentioned. In a letter to Whitefield, Hervey expresses himself thus: 'Your journals, dear sir, and sermons, especially that sweet sermon on What think ye of Christ? were the means of bringing me to the knowledge of the truth.'

David Dickson, once Professor of Divinity in Edinburgh, being asked, when on his deathbed, how he found himself answered, "I have taken my good deeds and bad deeds, and thrown them together in a heap, and fled from them both to Christ, and in Him I have peace."

John Whitecross, a schoolmaster, knew well what would gain the attention of the young and the book can be recommended for children of ten and over; it will also be of general interest to all readers and a valuable treasury of illustrative matter for the many in the home, school or church who have the responsibility of making Biblical teaching interesting.

SCRIPTURE ALONE: Exploring the Bible's Accuracy, Authority and Authenticity
James White

From the author of The King James Only Controversy comes a look at the principle behind Luther's rallying cry: "Sola Scriptura." Why do we believe God's Word trumps religious tradition? White, a Reformed Baptist, offers answers and argues that the biblical canon must remain "the sole infallible rule of faith for the church." 224 pages, softcover from Bethany.

The biblical truth and importance of the final and unique authority of Scripture is vital to the Christian life and to the health of the Church. James White's Scripture Alone is a passionate and accessible re-introduction to this significant subject. While liberals deny it and sectarians undermine it, every Bible-believing Christian ought to want to comprehend and warmly embrace what the great Protestant Reformers called "sola Scriptura." James White invites the reader into this glorious subject and shows him the way. - J. Ligon Duncan III, PhD

THE FORGOTTEN TRINITY: Recovering the Heart of Christian Belief (Revised & Updated)
JAMES R. WHITE

Even amidst today's emphasis on the reviving work of the Holy Spirit, the foundational doctrine of the Trinity is often neglected. White answers objections to this essential teaching and offers a balanced look at all three persons of the Trinity, to encourage a rediscovery of the heart of Christian belief and a deeper understanding of the Godhead. 224 pages, softcover from Bethany.

The Trinity is a basic teaching of the Christian faith. It defines God's essence and describes how He relates to us. The Forgotten Trinity is a concise, understandable explanation of what the Trinity is and why it matters. It refutes cultic distortions of God. It shows how a grasp of this significant teaching leads to renewed worship and deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian. And amid today's emphasis on the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, The Forgotten Trinity is a balanced look at all three persons of the Trinity.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CONTROVERSY: Catholics & Protestants--Do the Differences Still Matter?
James R. White

Is the theological rift between evangelicals and Catholics closing? White looks at Catholic beliefs about papal authority, church tradition, purgatory, Mary, and more, and contrasts them with clear explanations of the authority of Scripture and justification by faith alone. Discover why although Catholics and evangelicals share some common ground, crucial differences remain. 288 pages, softcover from Bethany.

"James White's ministry on the front lines of the Roman Catholic-Protestant debate has uniquely equipped him to write this book. It distills the strongest evidence for the Protestant position on justification by faith and the principle of Scripture alone. In an era when evangelicals seem eager to yield to Rome and set aside important differences. I'm grateful for this clarion reminder that the Reformation is not yet over." --Dr. John Macarthur

THE KING JAMES ONLY CONTROVERSY: Can You Trust The Modern Translations?
James R. White

It was the first Bible widely available to the English-speaking world and it has been trusted by Christians for generations. Now it's the center of an emotional debate where ''King James Only'' advocates charge that today's modern versions change vital doctrines. In this sober analysis, White refutes their claims, explaining the debate's basic concerns and the importance of textual criticism. Studying Scripture central to the controversy, he gives you a clearer understanding of this highly charged issue. 304 pages, softcover from Bethany.

"James White has given us a valuable resource that is understandable and dependable. Best of all, the book is spiritually edifying. That is especially refreshing, because much written on this subject is anything but edifying." - Dr. John MacArthur, Senior Pastor, Grace Community Church

"Sober, scholarly, courteous, and convincing." - Dr. J. I. Packer, Professor of Theology, Regent College

"The King James Only Controversy is scholarly and accurate, and its evaluation of opposing viewpoints fair. Anyone troubled by criticisms of English translations will find White trustworthy. I hope his book will be widely circulated. It will do much good." - Dr. Bruce Metzger, Professor of New Testament Emeritus, Princeton Theological Seminary

"This book should be read by all who are embroiled in the controversy." - Dr. D. A. Carson, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

THE SAME SEX CONTROVERSY: Defending and Clarifying the Bible's Message About Homosexuality
James White and Jeffrey Niell

In the guise of tolerance, modern culture grants alternative lifestyle status to homosexuality. Even more disturbing, some within the church attempt to revise and distort Christian teaching on this behavior.

The authors write for all who want to better understand the Bible's teaching on the subject, explaining and defending the foundational Bible passages that deal with homosexuality--including Genesis, Leviticus, and Romans. Expanding on these Scriptures, they refute the revisionists' arguments--including the claim that Christians today need not adhere to the Law. In a straightforward and loving manner, they appeal to those caught up in a homosexual lifestyle to repent and return to God's plan for His people.

THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS: Edited by George Offor, including Bunyan’s own Marginal Notes
JOHN BUNYAN

THIS IS A COMPLETE, UNABRIDGED EDITION CONTAINING THE ORIGINAL MARGINAL NOTES OF JOHN BUNYAN.

Other than the Bible, there is no book written in the English language that has been published more than “The Pilgrims Progress”, by John Bunyan. We believe there are two primary reasons for this. First, the book is thoroughly and eminently Scriptural. But secondly, and just as importantly, it is profoundly practical, being a deeply experiential and spiritual account of the realities of the true Christian call, conversion, walk, opposition, and spiritual rewards, both temporal and eternal; all applied to pilgrims of various gifts and capacities.

The main reason this particular edition of Pilgrims Progress was selected is because the original editor, George Offor, carefully reviewed all eight of Bunyan’s own editions being careful to produce a copy that adhered strictly to Bunyan’s own revisions of the text. But in addition, Offor was also careful to include Bunyan’s Marginal Notes. Bunyan himself provided these notes and insisted that they were one major key to understanding the text, the other being the illuminating work of The Spirit. We have made no changes to Offor’s/Bunyan’s text in this edition. May it be blessed to your soul as it has been to millions before you is our prayer.

Charles H. Spurgeon loved reading and re-reading this work, claiming to have read it over 100 times! Quite often his wife read it to him in the afternoon for relaxation and meditation.

George Whitefield said of this book, "It smells of the prison. It was written when the author was confined in Bedford jail. And ministers never write or preach so well as when under the cross: the Spirit of Christ and of Glory then rests upon them."

John Newton added, "Of all our author's writings, there is no one perhaps so universally and deservedly admired as his Pilgrim's Progress, in which he gives a delineation of the Christian life under the idea of a journey or a pilgrimage, from the City of Destruction to the heavenly Jerusalem. In this treatise Bunyan appears not only as a writer well instructed in the mysteries of the kingdom, but a man of real genius."

John Owen once went to hear John Bunyan preach. Charles II, hearing of it, asked the doctor why someone as thoroughly educated as he would want to hear a mere tinker preach. Owen replied, "May it please your Majesty, if I could possess the tinker's abilities to grip men's hearts, I would gladly give in exchange all my learning."

FROM TORONTO TO EMMAUS: The Empty Tomb and the Journey from Skepticism to FaithA Rational and Scriptural Response to "The Lost Tomb of Jesus"
James R. White

Once again the world is attacking the Biblical Doctrine of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The latest form is the book entitled "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" which is being featured in a documentary being aired on The Discovery Channel in the beginning of March. James R. White has determined to give a rational and Scriptural response to this most recent attack in order to give the people of God information they can use to refute these vicious attacks upon the very foundation of our faith. The Apostle Paul declared, "For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied." (1 Corinthians 15:16-19)

"James White adroitly dismantles the latest pseudo-scientific ploy of the skeptics. These increasingly clumsy and self-contradictory attempts to discredit the biblical account of the resurrection seem to reflect a growing level of desperation among Christianity's postmodern critics. Dr. White wonderfully responds to this flash-in-the-pan silliness with some timeless truth, highlighting why the Resurrection is vital to all Christian belief, and demonstrating why the testimony of Scripture is trustworthy." - Dr. John MacArthur

"James White has done it again. This timely book handles the infidel ravings of people dedicated to destroy Christianity with care and precision. It is a devastating refutation of an outrageous claim." - Dr. Jay Adams

"James White has done a splendid job of answering questions that would have been raised in the minds of thoughtful inquirers by the sensationalistic but dubious documentary 'The Lost Tomb of Jesus' by James Cameron and Simcha Jacobovici. Readers who think Christians are afraid of hard data will have to think again after reading this rapidly produced but superbly informed and rigorously reasoned rejoinder." - Dr. Ligon Duncan

"James White has applied his considerable skill as a Bible scholar and apologist to the task of debunking the latest bunk in 'the historical Jesus vs. the biblical Christ' false dichotomy so loved by theological liberals. The new bunk in question is the film The Lost Tomb of Jesus and the pseudo-scholarship and wacky-science that precipitated it. In a word, Dr. White readily shows that Christianity is perfectly safe from this lame attempt to stab it under the fifth rib." Dr. Robert P. Martin

"In light of I Peter 3:15, all Christians must heed the apologist's call. I am thankful that the church and the academy have in James White an able teacher to help "the rest of us" fulfill that happy task. 'From Toronto to Emmaus' is yet another superb piece of armor forged by this master craftsman." - Dr. David W. Bailey

"The Lost Tomb of Jesus documentary is a direct attack upon the reliability of the Resurrection of Christ and that makes it a direct attack upon the heart of Christianity. James White knows it. Here he cuts through the spin, exposing layers of inconsistencies and frequently turning his readers back to Scripture. But this book's enduring contribution to the church will be the reaffirmation that history and theology are inseparably bound." Tony Reinke

"James White has earned a reputation among evangelicals as a careful biblical scholar and as a skillful defender of the faith. His reasoned response to the alleged burial tomb of Jesus exposes this theory's numerous unwarranted speculations, errors, and contradictions. This brief book also reminds people of the Gospel message and of the authentic case for the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ." - Dr. Kenneth Samples

"How times remain the same; and, our need for valiant warriors stays constant. James White is to be applauded for taking pen in hand to fight against this hoax while directing all to the faith once delivered." - Dr. Mike Renihan

" We've come to expect that every year, just before Easter, the worldwide media will publish some ostensibly monumental new finding about 'the quest for the historical Jesus.' These are actually thinly-veiled attacks on core Christian beliefs--rooted in shameless cynicism. The "lost tomb" hoax of 2007 was one of the cheesiest, most offensive such assaults, boldly claiming that after nearly two millennia, credible scientific evidence--including DNA tests--had led certain 'experts' to conclude that the tomb of Jesus had finally been located. 'He is not risen; He is here,' the media reported with breathless gullibility.

The fact that it took James White barely more than two weeks to write a book that conclusively debunks the entire 'Jesus tomb' hoax demonstrates two important things: 1) The claims were obviously total rubbish and should never have been publicized in the first place; and 2) There may be no one better equipped than James White to defend the gospel skillfully in every major arena where it is currently under attack. Whether the battleground is historical, theological, textual, linguistic, or biblical, you can count on James to be ready to give a skilled defense of the truth and a convincing reason for the hope that is in him. I love him for that." - Phil Johnson

IS THE MORMON MY BROTHER? Discerning the Differences Between Mormonism and Christianity
James R. White

"James White is a careful thinker and a tenacious defender of orthodox, biblical Christianity. His book clearly shows why the Mormon religion is incompatible with Christianity. The divide is very wide indeed." - Kenneth R. Samples, Director - Augustine Fellowship Study Center

"The is one of the most illuminating updates on the current state of Mormonism that I have ever seen. It brings Mormonism's unstable, changeable truth clearly into view, and provides a convincing warning against the most polytheistic religion ever offered to the modern world." - Dr. Gleason Archer, Professor of Old Testament and Semitics at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

"A Straightforward, Accurate Answer to a Question Once Considered Settled!

In Television campaigns, parachurch events, and clergy fellowships all across the United States, Mormons are presenting themselves as mainstream Christians. Is it unloving or backward to say they aren't real Christians?

In contrast to Christian monotheism the belief in one God, Mormonism teaches that God was once a man who lived on another planet and was exalted to the status of God, and that Mormon men can also become gods upon death and resurrection. Is the Mormon My Brother? Shows how this fact alone means Mormons and Christians are irreconcilably at odds at faith's most basic level.

In recent years Mormon apologists and church leaders have waged an unflagging public relations campaign to try to rid themselves of the stigma of being considered a "cult" in the evangelical community -. James White demonstrates in a peaceable yet conclusive way that the divide between Mormonism and true Christianity remains an impassible gulf."

- Dr. John MacArthur, Senior Pastor, Grace Community Church

"The first act of love in reaching out to Mormons is to demonstrate that we do not worship the same God. In 'Is the Mormon My Brother?' James White powerfully drives home that message." - Hank Hanegraaff, President, Christian Research Institute

(1) HEAVEN OPENED: The Riches of God's Covenant by Richard Alleine

In Heaven Opened, Richard Alleine discusses the nature and blessings of God’s gracious covenant with His people. He outlines in great detail the roles in this covenant of God, Christ, the Spirit, the earth, the angels of light, the powers of darkness, death, and the kingdom. Furthermore, he explains and admires the fruits of the covenant in the believer’s life as it manifests itself in a renewed heart. The book ends with an equally moving exhortation to sinners and saints. See how God graciously opens the vaults of heaven to bless the souls of all those who come to Him in faith.

“In Heaven Opened, Richard Alleine appeals to God’s covenant of grace to enrich the spiritual lives of God’s people. Do you understand covenant theology? Read Alleine to see how it ought to shape your heart.” — Stephen Myers, associate professor of historical theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids

(2) SOLITUDE IMPROVED BY DIVINE MEDITATION by Nathaniel Ranew

This is a scarce book by a little-known Puritan, but was widely read and loved in his day. The premise of the book is that one should never waste time when alone, for that time could be spent in meditating upon God. Ranew covers what meditation is, that it is a duty for every Christian, how we can go about that duty, and how meditation is a spiritual pleasure.

(3) THE PRACTICE OF PIETY: A Puritan Devotional Manual by Lewis Bayly

The Practice of Piety is filled with scriptural and practical guidelines on the pursuit of holy living. Bayly begins his work with “a plain description of God in His essence, person, and attributes,” understanding this to be the basis for piety; every grace that sinners need springs from the gracious character of God. He emphasizes the necessity of true faith and holy living, and explains how to attain and maintain readiness for Christ’s second advent. Bayly then shows how to overcome obstacles to the pious life, stresses how piety is to be cultivated, and offers wise advice on the spiritual disciplines. He shows how to guide our thoughts, words, and actions in times of health as well as in times of sickness and affliction. He even provides directives to protect us from despair and the fear of death. In short, this is a book about how to live godly and die well.

(5) THE ART OF DIVINE CONTENTMENT by Thomas Watson

There is much in this world to leave us wearied. Yet the Apostle Paul could say, "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content." Commenting on Philippians 4:11, Thomas Watson provides us great encouragement as he points us to the only hope of gaining true contentment. He not only explains the nature of the contentment, but also gives motives to seek it and instructions for obtaining it. Watson's works are all marked by profound spirituality, terse style, impressive remarks, and practical illustrations. This book, first printed in 1653, is no exception.

(6) THE WORLD CONQUERED BY THE FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN by Richard Alleine

What does it mean to overcome the world? What are the spiritual weapons used to gain victories in the Christian life? Richard Alleine uses 1 John 5:1–4 as his primary text to answer these questions and many more. After explaining the believer’s armor and his enemy, Alleine treats at length how Christians obtain the victory over the world in the fight of faith. This book is a reminder that the Christian life is not idle and that every second we are fighting in a spiritual war. If you find yourself a battle-weary saint striving to stay the course, take up this book to learn from this great Puritan pastor on how to suit up in the whole armor of God and be strong in the Lord.

(8) THE ALMOST CHRISTIAN DISCOVERED by Matthew Mead

In this book, Matthew Mead shows twenty ways that a person can be deceived into thinking he is a Christian when he really is just an “almost Christian.” Mead also explains important topics like the need for self-examination, signs of the unpardonable sin, and reasons for a believer’s lack of comfort. He concludes with three matters that every reader must be convinced of: the evil and filthy nature of sin, the misery and desperate danger of the unregenerate, and the utter insufficiency and inability of anything other than Christ Jesus to minister relief. This Puritan classic is meant to shake nominal believers out of their complacency and to comfort true believers.

(9) ALTOGETHER LOVELY: The Glory and Excellency of Christ by Jonathan Edwards

Foreword

(10) GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR A COMFORTABLE WALKING WITH GOD by Robert Bolton

While Robert Bolton originally wrote General Directions as a spiritual guide for himself, its publication led to its becoming an instant classic. This book encourages us to abandon our loved sin, hate hypocrisy, exercise self-denial, live the life of faith, form right conceptions of Christianity, guard against worldliness, be warmed with the love of God, treasure reconciliation with God, keep the heart, and meditate on future bliss in order to loosen sin’s grip on the soul. Bolton also excels in describing particular Christian duties, such as tending to family, governing the tongue, and managing every action of our lives. Read Bolton’s book, be encouraged in your Christian walk, and find out first hand why generations of believers have cherished this sound volume of pastoral advice.

GOD AND ADAM: Reformed Theology and the Creation Covenant
Rowland Ward

Reformed churches have always been interested in the covenant idea, first the covenant of grace in Christ, but also a covenant with Adam before sin, commonly called the covenant of works. But what the covenant of works really meant in the 17th century, when it became standard orthodoxy, is often very poorly understood today. That ignorance has contributed to modifications which are not always for the better.

Selected Endorsements:

“I have assigned Rowland Ward’s book “God and Adam: Reformed Theology and the Creation Covenant” for almost two decades in my Covenant Theology courses at Reformed Theological Seminary. It is the best short survey of the history and development of Reformed opinion on the topic and gets the student up to speed quickly. I am delighted to see it back in print again.” -Dr. Ligon Duncan | Chancellor/CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary and the John E. Richards Professor of Systematic & Historical Theology

“When Rowland Ward’s 'God and Adam' first appeared, it made an excellent contribution to Reformed literature. Ward uncovered a wealth of material from the history of Reformed thought and provided thoughtful analysis of many important debates. The revision and expansion of this work in a new edition is a gift to the church. As Ward helps us see, a theologian’s view of God’s original relationship with Adam is inevitably intertwined with his view of Christ’s work and the salvation of his people.” -Dr. David VanDrunen | Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics at Westminster Seminary California

“I am delighted to see the republication of this judicious and thoughtful book, which packs an unbelievable amount of information into its relatively few pages! Whether one agrees with all of Rowland Ward’s conclusions or not, his balanced account of the contours of Reformed Covenant Theology will be invaluable to anyone thinking through these key issues for biblical and systematic theology.” -Dr. Gary Millar | Principal of Queensland Theological College, Brisbane, Australia
