1. Mix pattern and color to add whimsy. Though this Virginia home exudes mirth in every room, the bathroom particularly stands out for its green vanity with a floral print and generous inclusion of various patterns, from the charcoal-and-white encaustic tile floors to the Roman shade fabric and hand-painted wall treatment. If you’re not keen on going bold in the more public spaces of your home, a bathroom is a great place to get a little quirky.

2. Go green for a look that’s fresh and clean. Green is a great color for perking up bathrooms, because it’s a vibrant hue with a clean, refreshing feel — perfect for spaces where you want a hygienic vibe. Here the color dominates as a minty hue through subway tile, while a custom handmade wood vanity and a woven basket add a bit of natural warmth.

3. Add texture with the vanity and mirror. If you do wish to go with mostly white surfaces for that super-clean feel, consider bringing in a bit of warmth and texture with wood. This Canadian bathroom shows two great places to include the rustic material: on the vanity and as a mirror frame.

4. Keep the palette simple in compact spaces. In small spaces, layering in too many colors and materials makes the room visually busy really quickly.
Instead, take a cue from this 55-square-foot California bathroom. A simple palette that mixes dark accents against a bright backdrop keeps things straightforward and elegant while still offering lots of drama and interest.

5. Play up open spaces. When you’ve got abundant space, you might as well celebrate it. The designers of this spec home in Texas, where wide-open spaces are often found inside as well as out, highlighted the spaciousness of the bathroom with the combination of an open shower and a stand-alone tub, set on large-format tiles unobstructed by any sort of curb or delineation from the vanity area. Meanwhile, a clerestory window helps punctuate the high ceiling with plenty of natural light.

bethperson reply - thick fluffy rugs can help, (with a north facing room that seems cold). They feel great underfoot!
Also, it's fine to mix rich dark colors with the aqua greenish glass. Perhaps through accents or window treatment fabric?
Hope this helps!
Personally, I don't believe people are ready for retro-green tiles again. Most folks are ripping out the 60's pink & green bathroom colors opting for anything but pink or green.
How would you redesign a bathroom from the 80's The tub, sink and toilet are rose. The floor and vanity top are black tiles. I don't wish to replace the floor.
