3 Fashion Tips for Breaking Plus-Size Fashion Myths: Bold Color

“Plus Size Women shouldn’t wear color.”

Have you heard that insane myth before?  I have!

And I am here to tell you, it’s just that — a MYTH.

Recently, I was on a weekend getaway in Tampa and was chatting with a girlfriend about style, fashion, etc. when she said, “I only wear black.”

Slightly taken aback, I asked, “why?”  Knowing me it was probably more like, “Wait, what?! Omg! WHY?!”

She said, “well you know, for my size, it’s the most flattering.”  While black can be slimming, and most certainly is a classic, it should never be the only color you feel comfortable wearing, no matter your size.  Women of all sizes could wear color and they SHOULD wear color.  The idea that plus-size women shouldn’t wear color is a total myth!

If you’re unsure if you can pull off color, here are 3 tips to help you out:

  1. Concentrate on your complexion. I have an olive skin tone, brown hair and hazel eyes and generally look best in warm colors.  I prefer to dress in yellows, greens, and reds when wearing color.  Do you have a lighter complexion?  Blonde hair, blue eyes? Try blues and pinks!  Darker complexion?  Girl, you can probably pull it all off!
  2. It’s all about fit and shape.  Seriously, though.  Fit makes all the difference!  The jacket and pant set I am wearing are both from Talbots and I am so impressed by the shape and texture.  I love that the pants are thick enough that they hide any panty lines and that they have a slight stretch which makes them extremely comfortable.
  3. Start Small.  You don’t need to go from wearing all black for years to dressing like the rainbow.  Wear one colorful piece at a time!  Feeling a bit bolder?  Try a semi-monochromatic look like I did here.  I opted to break up the yellow jacket and pants by adding a white turtleneck to keep the look casual and cool.

Most importantly, always remember that fashion is a way to showcase your personality.  I hope this spring and summer you feel empowered to bring some color into your wardrobe!

Your myth-buster,

Kristina
