ONE of the best ways to encourage people to eat their greens is to get them to grow their own.
A budding band of residents are starting their own community garden in Baldivis Grove Estate after developer Frasers Property Australia donated the land.
Presently the 450sq m patch of land is akin to a sandy desert but the residents are expecting to open it to the community by the end of April.

READ NOW“We had been trying to get one at the high school but met a lot of roadblocks – the location for the plot kept being moved, so nothing was secured,” Candice Marsden said.
“When this came up it was great and exactly what we had been wanting.
“It’s about getting the community together and with the block sizes shrinking, people need the space to be able to do some gardening.
“It’s exciting and the garden will be for the kids – there is no better way to encourage them to eat their vegies.”
FPA community development man-ager Michelle Mrzyglocki said the garden donation was a “tip of the hat” to the area’s heritage of former market gardens.
Ultimately, interested residents will be able to apply for a garden plot at the site off Pike Road, with a usage fee attached to cover costs for insurance, soils, manures and composts.
The group is looking for volunteers to assist with reticulation and small building works and is planning to have a stall at the next Twilight Markets in Baldivis on March 30.
