HOUSTON, TX – It wasn’t about basketball perfection, it was about giving back. That’s the mindset head coach Kelvin Sampson told his Houston Cougars before hosting a Special Olympics day at the Guy V. Lewis Development Center.

“We all have a platform to help reach out to others,” Sampson said. “As a coach, people will judge you whether you win or lose a basketball game. I think along the way, it’s important to teach your own players how to give back – don’t be takers, be givers.”

Damyean Dotson is in his first year playing for the Cougars basketball team, but he got a kick out of working with students from his alma mater, Jack Yates High School.

“When I was in high school, I used to see these same kids walking down the hallway,” Dotson said. “At the end of the day, we’re all human beings, and we all deserve a shot. Just to give back is enough for me.”

This is the second year the Cougars have hosted this event, and the plan is to continue the tradition next season.
