UPDATE with more details: Dominic Cooper has been tapped to replace Henry Cavill in the action-thriller Stratton, the movie based on the series of novels by ex-SBS agent Duncan Falconer. This is the action thriller that Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr first told you Cavill had picked to launch his Promethean production shingle, with the Superman actor attached to produce star as John Stratton, an operative of the SBS who works with the Intelligence Detachment in Northern Ireland. Now Cooper will play Stratton, after Cavill departed the project just before production started. Austin Stowell will co-star as his U.S. counterpart and Simon West is still directing.
Cooper this spring landed a deal to star in the AMC drama pilot Preacher, based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult 1990s comic. The project, from Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, Sony TV and AMC Studios.
Stowell, who co-starred in Whiplash and is upcoming in two Steven Spielberg projects — the TNT drama Public Morals from Edward Burns and a role in Spielberg’s own Bridge Of Spies opposite Tom Hanks — is set as LT. Hank Monroe, a heroic, hardened American Navy SEAL who teams with Stratton to combat an international terrorist. Gemma Chan, Tyler Hoechlin, Tom Felton, Thomas Kretschmann, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Jake Fairbrother round out the cast.
The pic is still being produced and financed by GFM Films via Stratton Film Productions Ltd. Shooting gets underway next week in Italy and eventually the UK. GFM is also handling worldwide sales.
Cooper is repped by CAA and UK Agent Alex Irwin. Stowell is repped by CAA and ROAR.
