Why this petition matters

Started by Maria Tracey

Every day, tents and belongings of homeless people are confiscated and disposed of. Every day homeless people are "moved on" - when there is nowhere else for them to go. Every day homeless people are given on-the-spot fines .. Effectively criminalising being poor, vulnerable and abandoned by society. Every night, public spaces such as indoor car parks, sports arenas etc sit empty whilst homeless people face the very real risk of freezing to death.

We call on the UK Govt to immediately (1) end homeless fines (2) cease confiscation and disposal of belongings/tents (3) open up public spaces such as indoor car parks, covered sports halls etc as shelter for rough sleepers.

We also encourage the UK Govt to embrace the employment opportunities offered by the running and supervision of (3) funded by a modest subsidy from the Govt. This funding could be realised by reducing or removing the following :

- Tax cuts for the wealthy /corporations;

- Houses of Parliament / Buckingham Palace renovations;

- Excessive MP expenses.

This would also create more jobs, more tax revenue and more spendable income to inject into our failing economy.
