Women's Lunch Group to begin again!
The women's lunch group will meet on Saturday, January 27 at 12:30pm at Six Mile Chop House, 4931 W 6th St. in Lawrence. All women are welcome to join us for lunch and conversation!
Service Leadership Opportunities
We want to welcome more members of the community to lead parts of services on Shabbat and holidays. We have developed a form as one way for you to let the Ritual Committee know that you are interested in sharing your voice with the community during services. Contact Marty in the LJCC office and she will send you the form, and put you in touch with the Ritual Committee.
Big Sonia to show at Lawrence Arts Center
On Saturday, January 27, as a part of the Free State Film Festival and in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, The Lawrence Arts Center will offer a special screening of the new documentary film, Big Sonia at 4:00pm. A panel discussion will follow the screening.
In the last store in a defunct shopping mall in Kansas City, 91-year-old Sonia Warshawski – great-grandmother, businesswoman, and Holocaust survivor – runs the tailor shop she’s owned for more than 30 years. But when she’s served an eviction notice, the specter of retirement prompts Sonia to resist her harrowing past as a refugee and witness to genocide. A poignant story of generational trauma and healing, Big Sonia also offers a laugh-out-loud-funny portrait of the power of love to triumph over bigotry, and the power of truth-telling to heal us all. Tickets available at the Lawrence Arts Center website.
Stan Lombardo Performance of The Odyssey to benefit the Kansas Zen Center
You are invited to a special benefit performance and reception as Stan Lombardo performs his translation of The Odyssey on Sunday, January 28 at 6:00pm at the Cider Gallery in Lawrence. This performance will benefit the Kansas Zen Center’s building fund. For more information, go here: http://kansaszencenter.org/odyssey-tickets.
Provacative play, Bent at Lawrence Arts Center
One of the most provocative plays ever written, Martin Sherman’s “Bent,” will take place at the Lawrence Arts Center from January 25-28. Co-directed by Dan Born and Christie Dobson, this touching and heartbreaking play centers around Max, a gay man in 1930’s Berlin who is at odds with his wealthy family because of his homosexuality. As his entire world crumbles under the Nazi regime, Max experiences persecution, love, heartbreak and in the end, a sense of redemption during his imprisonment in a one of Hitler’s notorious concentration camps. Suggested ticket price $10. More information may be found at the Lawrence Arts Center website.
