PLEDGE:
As the Governor of New York will not make our health, safety, democracy and greater climate a priority, we make this pledge: We will join other New Yorkers on April 23rd in Albany to participate in, or support, civil disobedience to demand that Governor Cuomo live up to his climate rhetoric. We make this pledge for all who are living today, as well as for all future generations.
BACKGROUND:
One year ago, Governor Cuomo announced in his 2017 State of the State that “the State must double down by investing in the fight against dirty fossil fuels and fracked gas from neighboring states.” And in 2014, he outright banned High-Volume Hydraulic Fracturing, or fracking, on account of health and environmental impacts.
However, New York has seen a maze of fracking infrastructure proposals all over the state- pipelines, power plants, compressor stations etc - which wreak havoc on communities' health and safety, while shackling New York to decades more of climate destroying fossil fuels. Meanwhile, New York lags in its transition to renewable energy, and the companies who continue to pollute and ravage our environment for private profit remain unchecked.
We know that Governor Cuomo can TALK the talk, now it’s time for Cuomo to WALK THE TALK and protect our future by:
1. Halt all fracked-gas projects statewide.
2. Transition just and swift to 100% renewable energy, while addressing issues of energy efficiency and storage.
3. New York State must make all corporate polluters pay for their detriment to our planet.
Governor Cuomo must do this with courage and expediency.
