MICHAEL NICHOLSON, a veteran war correspondent whose career spanned more five decades, has died.

Michael Nicholson has died aged 79

The ITN presenter passed away on December 11 while on a cruise with his wife Diana, ITV News has revealed.

Michael reported from conflicts all around the world, including the fall of Saigon back in 1975, the Falklands War, the Balkans conflict, the Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

"He was an amazing father, devoted grandfather, loving husband and dear friend," his family said in a statement last night.

It continued: "A dedicated family man, he was desperately looking forward to celebrating Christmas with his children and grandchildren.

Michael Nicholson was almost without doubt the finest television journalist of his generation.

"He was a highly accomplished correspondent, much admired by his peers across the world.

"His passing has devastated us all but he will be forever remembered through his enormous love for life and substantial professional legacy."

Michael first joined ITN in 1964 and 25 years later he took on the role of senior foreign reporter for the network.

He was also known for smuggling an orphaned nine-year-old girl out of Sarajevo and bringing her back to the UK, where he adopted her.

Sir Trevor McDonald said Michael Nicholson was the finest television journalist of his generation

Sir Trevor McDonald paid tribute to him, saying: "Michael Nicholson was almost without doubt the finest television journalist of his generation."

ITN chief executive John Hardie tweeted: "We mourn the passing of ITN legend Michael Nicholson. From Saigon to Sarajevo he devoted his life to shining a light on the darkest stories."

Michael leaves behind his spouse, four children and three grandchildren.
