Massive cache of stolen cars, jet skis, ATV's and more found in South Salt Lake home
SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — UPDATE (9:07 p.m.) - South Salt Lake Police have announced 38-year-old Anthony Lee Cantrell was arrested and charged with 14 counts of receiving stolen property, all second-degree felonies.
(KUTV) - Police have launched an investigation after at least 14 trailers packed with stolen goods were found outside a South Salt Lake home.
Police received a report of an abandoned trailer at 66 West Oakland Avenue around 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
When they arrived, the discovered the trailer had been stolen along with several others on the property. When they began digging, they found stolen jet skis, ATVs, boats, and cars.
Police then issued a warrant to search the home and found most everything inside the home was also stolen.
"I can hardly imagine the amount of money that's in there. It's got to be hundreds of thousands of dollars," Gary Keller, public information officer with the South Salt Lake Police Department said.
Police arrested two people renting the home, but have not yet released their names.
Charles Peckinpaugh told 2News he just moved into the house about a month ago. He said his roommate buys a lot from eBay. He had no idea all of the items were stolen.
"The jet skis and stuff he's been buying for years. I figured he wanted to open a business to rent jet skis or something like that," Peckinpaugh said.
At least a half-dozen people came by to claim their stolen goods. Israel Sosa found his trailer that was taken back in October.
"When they stole it, it was an empty trailer and when I got here it was full of stuff, which is not mine," Sosa said.
Sosa said he thought he’d never see his trailer again. He was shocked to get the phone call from police.
Investigators have hours of work ahead of them as they sort through all the stolen items.
They are loading up all of the bigger items and bringing them to a local impound lot.
Police ask people not to stop by the home. They will be contacting the rightful owners.
