Coming this Spring!

Art will once again bloom beginning in spring on the lightpole banners in downtown Farmington! The Mineral Area Council on the Arts and the City of Farmington are pleased to be partnering on the 4th Annual Art Blooms in Farmington Downtown Banner Design contest.

During the month of January, local K-12 students worked hard to draw, paint or otherwise illustrate animals for this year's competition theme of "It's a Zoo Out There!". Come February 2, we had over 1100 entries to choose from. It was hard work for our judging panel to narrow the pool down to 60, but they took on the challenge and we have announced this year's group of winners!

We've sent the artwork into production and now we, along with all of you, are eagerly awaiting the art's arrival in downtown Farmington. We expect the banners to be up in April and we'll be sure to let you know when they make their appearance!

Honoring Doc Reney

You may have heard the sad news: a Mineral Area College legend, Dr. G. Richard Reney, theatre professor, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 11. He was an inspiration to so many at MAC and in our community, and while he will be greatly missed, his legacy lives on in all the wonderful people who were blessed to have him as a colleague or instructor.  A memorial service will be held at Mineral Area College next Friday, February 23.

For more information about the service, please contact Laura Raymer, laura@farmingtonregionalchamber.com or Chuck Gallaher, cgallahe@mineralarea.edu

Arts Happenings

MAC Little Theater Guild presents
ALL MY SONS
February 15-17, 7 pm
Mineral Area College Fine Arts Theater, Park Hills

During the war Joe Keller and Steve Deever ran a machine shop which made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money. The twin shadows of this catastrophe and the fact that the young Keller son was reported missing during the war dominate the action. The love affair of Chris Keller and Ann Deever, the bitterness of George Deever returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father's partner free, are all set in a structure of almost unbearable power. The climax showing the reaction of a son to his guilty father is fitting conclusion to a play electrifying in its intensity. A tremendously impressive drama that received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.

Tickets: $7 Adults; $3 Students and Seniors
Available at the MAC Bookstore and at the door. All seats reserved. Rated PG-13

This year's festival features Chilean-born, New York City-based tenor saxophonist and bandleader Melissa Aldana, whose uniquely personal sound and innovative musical approach have established her as one of the most vital and important voices in music today. NPR Music described her as "a bold new talent . . .with her own style." In 2013, she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the Thelonious Monk competition. She is also the recipient of the Martin E. Segal award from Jazz at Lincoln Center and a double recipient of the Altazor Award, Chile's highly prestigious national arts prize.
